Why stomach issues after reversal?

Postby teachpdx » Sat Feb 22, 2014 1:51 pm

Hi All,

I'm doing OK after my reversal last March, but I'm getting frustrated about all the stomach upset eating things I used to eat before without problems. I understand bowel issues and foods that irritate the bowels, but why do I keep getting an upset stomach when all the changes happened way down the pipe? I tried to google and only got "bowel" answers. Any explanations would be most appreciated. Kristi

I hate replying to my own posts, but I just read the post re weather changes and migraines/upset stomach. I noticed my stoma site hurting a bit the other day and I wonder if my stomach upset might be related to weather. I'll have to pay more attention.

I've been having the same issue too but no idea why. Same thing with my stoma site - the wound is totally healed and closed up but all of a sudden it's been really sore the last couple of days.

I've just come to accept that when you mess with the colon, you're just likely to have problems to some degree forever. My best advice would be to find a good Naturopath who can work with you to determine what food and supplements would help you the most.

I find things hard to eat also, but I do not think it is because of reversal. After 23 rounds of chemo, radiation and surgeries, my stomach just doesn't like some things anymore. It hates ice cream, (although I still indulge occasionally) and really dislikes vegetables, including the corn I've been eating all my life. Perhaps since things are digesting normally ( instead of hurrying to the bag), it makes things a little uncomfortable while normal digestion takes place. Things have settled down for me, and I have decided to just wait and see if things get better.

Who knows but chemo changed my entire gut permanently. It is sluggish, inefficient and have mild constipation ALL the time.

Hi all -

I rarely post here, but one cause of nausea is "irritation" of any of the GI organs. While never having had a reversal, I suspect that qualifies for "irritation".

Sorry for your issues,

Thanks for all of your replies. I guess a lot of us have digestive issues. Guess I need to learn to live with it and try and adjust my diet. I've reintroduced Citrucel to my diet and am adding ginger where I can. kgd

My tummy still acts up occasionally and I am two years out from my reversal. I can eat something and have no reaction at all - then eat it at some other time and I have a severe reaction and a huge clean out. No complaints about the clean out, though, as I feel ten pounds lighter afterwards. There is really nothing that I can think of that triggers my digestive problems but they are there. Thankfully I don't experience a flare up very often at this point. Good luck!
