Nerve Pain - post resection surgery

Postby Charlesmarles » Fri Feb 21, 2014 6:43 pm

Has anyone experienced severe nerve pain (burning) near an incision site after having a Sigmoid colon resection? I had surgery Feb 3rd, was sent home with norco. Last weekend this nerve pain started. I saw my surgeon on Wednesday and she have me Lyrica for the nerve pain. It hasn't started working yet and I am losing my mind! Thanks in advance for any advice you can share.

I had my surgery done end of January and yes, I have experienced nerve pain. I sometimes have random shots of pain, burning and crazy itching near the incision site. I'm almost 4 wks post surgery and it feels like I'm holding a sandbag inside me when I walk. I'm still very sore but my surgeon says it is to be expected. I'm taking 60mg of Cymbalta and if the pain gets really bad I have Tylenol 3.
I hope you feel better soon :)

...The Lyrica can take up to 4 weeks for you to start feeling the full effects of it, but I hope you will feel some relief soon.

I had a Laparoscopic LAR. This left me with about a 4" incision just below my belt line. For probably 6 weeks I had a pain that felt like someone was stabbing me with a knife near the incision when I moved in certain ways. It eventually faded to nothing but, I'd have to say it was the sharpest pain I'd ever felt.

Good morning,
My surgery was in Sept and I still feel a soreness sometimes. Started chemo in Oct and and that didn't help. Onc and surgeon said the chemo slows down the healing process so it will be sore for quite a while. Vitamin B6 does help and it will slowly ease as time goes on but unfortunately until you're done with treatments it just takes some time. Don't get me wrong, I was scared to death something terrible was happening in there and had them completely check it out just to alleviate some of the stress because goodness knows we have enough to be stressed about during this time. 9 treatments down with only 3 more, neuropathy, fatigue, thrush 3 times, ENT dr visit, and MRI scheduled for Wednesday but getting there! Write everything down no matter how minor and let them check it out as you play a big part in all your treatments.
Good luck!
Hugs and prayers

Thank you for the replies. I was feeling so good when I first came home and then took a deep dive down. I know I will just need to give my body more time to heal. Thanks again and Hugs to all!

Yes, I had exactly the same thing after my resection in Feb 2013. Can't remember how long it lasted but it was several months. Every once in a while I'd just be sitting there and all of a sudden get a sharp pain around the incision site. Even now, a year post surgery, the area still gets a little sore from time to time.

In the event anyone is following this post, I have found relief! I am still taking the Lyrica 100 in the morning and 150 at night. 800mg of ibu 3x/day and 25mg Topamax at night. The nerve pain only comes back, just a smidge around 9pm. I get too foggy if I take 150 of lyrica during the day. Pain Management Dr's and I tried many different drugs before we found this combo to work.

Hi
I had a laparascopic colon resection due to diverticulitis on March 2 this year.I went home after 2 nights at the hospital and was feeling great until about week and a half ago when I started feeling these sharp, stabbing pain and burning in my inside sutures that go sometimes to my back. I have been to the ER twice had a CT scan, blood test, urine test, ultrasounds and everything came back clear. My doctor prescribed Bentyl to help with spasms and order to increase fiber intake to deal with constipation but it hasn't helped with the pain. The ER doctor send me home saying it could be pain from the nerves that are still healing and trying to reconnect. she said to stop the Bentyl but did not prescribed anything. I have increased my fiber intake and move my bowels everyday. These pains get better when I lay down flat on my back sometimes. The only pills I take are Gas X and Tylenol on occasion. Please help! Thanks!

First, you may want to start your own post since this is old. As far as burning, I had sigmoid and partial liver resection. I had burning in liver resection area weeks after. I dealt with it outside the oxy I was already on. All I can say is when I was in the hospital they gave me toradol for the pain there on top of the other pain meds and it helped. Please ask your doc. Best wishes

Hi,
I am not sure how to make a new post or if the one I posted was posted correctly but wanted to give an update.
Today is 3 weeks since I started with the sharp pains and burning sensations in my abdominal wall. I saw my surgeon last week and he performed a version of colonoscopy at his office, he also looked at my last CT scan images, not report, and all results were good. He recommended I see a pain specialist, but upon realizing this would involve heavy anesthesia and narcotics, I decided against it, continued my zBentyl 20mg every 6 hrs and started with acupuncture for what seemed to be a nerve in the surgery area acting up.
I must report that I started feeling way better right after my first treatment. My pains are not as sharp or often as they used to be, they are more manageable. I also increased my fiber and went to soft diet, used a heating pad and rested. Yesterday I went out window shopping for about 2 hours and felt great.Today I am going to a party, let's see how that goes.I will take it easy, no alcohol or dancing.Let's see how I progress.
I finally start to see a beginning to feeling well!

I had a full open colon resection no lasting nerve damage around incision. Have had 3 thoracotomies, 2 yrs ago, still have some very uncomfortable nerve pain. In the ranking of problems nerve pain is a distant second to on-going metastatic disease. There are reasonable meds for pain management there is no solution for metastaic disease.

An update..no more pain since this last Mon.I have continued my acupuncture , and I am very active since Mon. I lowered my Bentyl to 10 mg.Hope I can stop using it tomorrow Friday! I atribute my healing to the acupuncture and heat pad besides the bentyl. These are the only 2 new things I did!
