Major turn of events

Postby janderson » Thu Feb 20, 2014 9:00 am

Some of you read my recent posts about a recurrence (2 liver spots, 2 chest wall spots) and looking for advice since my surgeon of over 8 years who did 3 liver resections on me refused to do surgery this time. I found a medical publication siting the benefit of lung and liver resection for MCRC. I sent him that info knowing that it might offend him and he was likely to come back with a reason why it didn't apply to me such as I technically don't have lung metastasis, but I pointed out to him that my research shows that it would still be treated like lung surgery and performed by a lung surgeon. Surprisingly he replied right back saying let me know what your oncologist thinks.

I was my oncologist yesterday ready to plead my case for surgery. There was no pleading. He was totally on board with surgery ASAP and possibly a little mop up chemo afterwards. He is thinking exactly like me that I am running out of treatment options and wants to hold out on chemo as long as possible until I really need it.

So I emailed my surgeon and his reply was "I thought you would come to this decision, I have already been talking to our thoracic surgical oncologist about this". So surgery is set for next Friday 2/28 to remove all 4 spots. There will be the lung surgeon, liver surgeon and intervention radiologist working on me (They might use RFA on 1 or both spots of my liver).

Please send prayers or positive thoughts that surgery is a success.

Sounds like a good plan, and I'm glad your doctors are all on board. Nice, fast service, too.

Great news, I remember a fellow CC member said in her blog that you're always your best advocate. Once again, we have a great example!

This is AWESOME news -- and as someone who may someday be in your shoes, this info gives me great encouragement.

You might have already mentioned......please forgive me if I missed this -- WHAT article did you use to prompt your doctor to consider surgery?
I found a medical publication siting the benefit of lung and liver resection for MCRC.

Thanks so much!

That's great news! Wow- if this board has taught me one thing, it's to be my own advocate and not to take "no" for an answer without researching options. I'm so happy you got the response you did from your surgeon and your oncologist. All the best wishes for the surgery!! :)
