Losing blood...

Postby polluxx » Wed Sep 10, 2008 3:48 pm

I've posted before that my dad has stage IV colon cancer, and is being treated at MD Anderson with single agent Irinotecan.

He had his first treatment, and had no side effects other than being sleepy.

Today, he went to his cardiologist for a follow up and is receiving 2 units of blood. This is in addition to 7 units that he has already received in the last 8 weeks.

Has anyone here ever lost blood at that rate?

We are grateful that he is feeling better. I just wonder what the significance of such a rapid loss is.

I don't have an answer yet, so I was hoping that someone else had been in the same situation.

Is his spleen enlarged. That can chew up red blood cells in a hurry.

This must be both frustrating and scary. I hope they can get to the bottom of it.

My husband was released from the hospital Friday. The bleeding from his stoma had stopped. They determine that it was caused by Avastin. Today, the bleeding started again. After much research, I'm not so sure it is the Avastin. I have new questions for the doctors. If we don't end up back at the ER tonight; I'll ask them tomorrow.

We don't know the site of the blood loss. A few weeks ago, he had a stint put in his heart. The doctor told me that his levels should be between 12 and 14. Dad's were a little over 8.

He received blood then, and recieved iron when he had his Chemo. A week after that, his levels were only 7.

He recieved more blood, and can't believe how much more energy he has.

I just wondered if anyone on the board has been in a similar situation.
