In for a blockage, at hospital

Postby AnneAnne » Sun Dec 08, 2013 4:55 pm

Help. What worked for you to get things going? In the hospital for a block an they do not want to operate. What can I do. Lots of pain, did some walking but no gas!

Placing a heating pad on the abdomen helps. Also, lie on your back and bring your knees to your chest. Then slowly roll your hips back and forth in a side-to-side motion. Repeat several times.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you. They are saying if no gas passes that we're in trouble and they said it should do so by tomorrow. Did the walking, spent time in the bathroom. Nothing yet. No bowels sounds and then some bowel sounds which is good. Thank you:))

I lay on my left side, as advised by a nurse, and it really helped! Also drank grape juice.

Drink some coffee. I recall someone told my wife that when she had her resection and was trying to get things started again.

I'm sorry you are going through this. My mom had a resection surgery back in January and as of early October, was informed she has a partial blockage due to scar tissue from this surgery. In November, she began to show the symptoms of the blockage. She had horrible nausea and vomited after every meal, and had no gas or bowel movements.

In the hospital, they let us know they would prefer not to operate, as further surgery can cause more scar tissue/blockage.

Instead, they used an NG tube (a tube that goes up her nose, and into her stomach). This tube then drains all of the bile/waste in her stomach, as she was not having a bowel movement. Although, she absolutely hated the tube going in, she felt SOOOO much better once her stomach was drained. There is also now no waste weighing upon the blockage. Then, they put her on a liquid diet, then a thicker liquid diet (lots of Ensure/Boost to make sure she was getting enough calories).

She had to be hospitalized twice for this, but is healing and improving a lot as each day goes by. She is now passing gas and having bowel movements.

I hope this helps, and I hope you feel better soon!!!!
