Injection accident

Postby ejneary » Tue Dec 03, 2013 9:48 am

Has anyone experienced oxaliplatin being injected into the muscle tissue instead of the vein? What happens when this occurs?

Thanks!!!

My understanding is that it's pretty brutal even on veins - that's why they usually install a port-a-cath when this stuff is prescribed.

I took four rounds of oxi in my arms--two in each. I wouldn't want to squirt that stuff anywhere but in the vein. And not really there, either.

I'm not sure if my first treatment of oxy was in the muscle but about 3/4 of the way thru it had to be stopped. My arm started hurting and felt like I had about 12 meat injectors in it with acid coming out. It hurt like that for about 20 hours. My next 12 rounds were thru a power port and although oxy is still brutal, I wouldn't have been able to finish with it directly in my arm.

  • IV Extravasation - If your Oxaliplatin infusion is by peripheral IV, then there is a potential problem of "IV extravasation", which is the leakage of Oxaliplatin into the tissues outside the vein, causing tissue necrosis and other problems:

    Extravasation (intravenous)

    Irritants vs.Vesicants

Oxaliplatin is classified not as an irritant, but as a vesicant, which means that if it leaks into tissues where it's not supposed to be, it will likely kill those tissues. Thus, it is of utmost importance that the IV line be inserted professionally and properly, and secured so that it cannot be jerked loose, etc. There are very strict standards for inserting IV lines that contain vesicant liquids. Just make sure they do it right!

I had two injections of oxali into my veins and initially I was convinced they missed and it ended up in the muscle - it was sooo painful. And thats why I got the port today. My arm would hurt for a week + after the infusion.
