Re: Oxaliplatin- only 8 rounds?

Three years ago, I was scheduled for 12 rounds of FOLFOX with Oxaliplatin. After eight rounds, I was beginning to exhibit neuropathy, so Round Nine was accompanied by a couple of pre-med minerals (Magnesium? Calcium??). Anyway, it did no good so we stopped OXI at nine, those I completed the 12 with the rest of the chemo. The finger numbness abated, but the soles of my feet are still numb.

I've since been told by my dietician that starting Vitamin B6 at that time would help with the neuropathy, but I didn't hear that until recently. Too little, too late.

I also want to make clear from study -not yet from personal experience - that the neuropathy from Oxy is often delayed. If you wait until the symptoms get bad, you can expect they will end up worse so timing the stop or slow down is key.

I did 10 of scheduled 12
neuropathy was getting more pronounced. I am almost 3 years out from last infusion. my feet are pretty numb, and I have tingling in my finger tips. My arms and legs fall
"asleep" very easily now also. the eight round was my worst. we skipped the schedule and did number 9 after four weeks instead of 2. then did 10 2 weeks later. after 10 I had enough of it. I told the onc I didn't want anymore and she quickly agreed. I should have stopped at 8.

Oh man, I'm discouraged by how many people are saying the neuropathy gets worse after. I've had 9 rounds, though my doc has reduced the oxali for the last few rounds. Still, my neuropathy is REALLY bad now, if it is going to get worse--ugh!! My doc has been saying all along that she is thinking about stopping the oxali because of all the many problems I've had with it, but then when it comes to infusion time she will say, let's keep pushing because of all my positive lymph nodes. I really thought we would stop at 8 because she was saying that was becoming more common. Now I'm thinking maybe next time I will just say no more oxali!! I haven't wanted to make the call myself because I am so emotionally close that it is difficult to be objective. I figured that she has a lot more experiencing with this than I do. I keep talking myself back and forth. Decision, decisions!
