BEER AND CHEMO

Postby KWT » Thu Aug 29, 2013 5:27 pm

I'm on my 7 day break between xelox cycles and would love to whack a couple beers down. Of course the onc says you shouldn't,anyone have a different opinion? I have st.4 cancer and I shouldn't drink a couple beers? wtf

I was just wondering the same thing. I used to enjoy my daily glass (or two) of wine, and I am wondering if it would be so awful to have an occasional glass between chemo treatments. I haven't asked my onc yet.

Kenny, my onc said specifically that if beer could help you get to sleep, avoid anxiety, and make you feel good, he had no problem with it, echoed by my oncology nurse! Her exact statement was why not, your on chemo  Oviously I've been known to knock back a few(too many)

I did. Sorry, but I enjoy a beer or two (or more?). Not as many as I did before all this, but my kegerator was lonely out in the garage full of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, I couldn't let it just sit. 8) A lot of the time on chemo the thought of a beer was unappealing, but there were a few infusions when I felt pretty good and if I felt like one or two, I drank it. I can't see a reason why a couple of beers would hurt. But I'm certainly not a doctor. I was on the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Drink up is my advice.

Lamentably, I can't put away as much as I'd like. I love a good, nasty-aze, hopped-up IPA, but generally have trouble getting through the second one.

Cheap red wine goes down a lot better these days.

Over the years, various medical professionals have asked, "How much do you drink, Mr. BrownBagger?" I usually reply, "I drink until I feel better."

My kids haven't seen me with a beer in my hand for two months. they're going to start asking questions pretty soon.

I did radiation and xeloda before my surgery and 8 rounds of xelox after the surgery. I did drink and I still drink. The booze will not cause some interaction with the chemo. Most Doctors don't approve of booze at any time or in any quantity. Booze comes with its own risks but none of those are related to your chemo.

Damn, it was immediate for me 8) Of course my kids are old enough to question why they couldn't find a beer in the refrigerator. I have learned to hold out until they leave

Mr. Brownbagger? It's amazing how cordial medical professionals can be, when you're being charged $8,000.00 a treatment

I agree drink up...I recently finished 10 rounds of folfox...I would wait for 5 days after pump disconnect and then drink a beer or three...my favorite.... Russian Imperial Stout from Stone Brewing...10.9% ABV so it can make you stupid. It helps me relax, reduces my stress levels.

My docs may be the exception but both oncologists I have seen told me alcohol wouldn't hurt in moderation, if my stomach could handle it, and if I wasn't on pain pills. They did mention I might find I didn't enjoy the taste of it at this point but I pretty much have to find out don't I? I think maybe Saturday I'll try one and see. And oh a hopped up IPA sounds great. The last bar I managed has about 70 beers on tap. Maybe they could be sweet talked into making a delivery? (Actually pretty sure they can ha)
