Barium can cause diarhia- Retitled

Postby justin case » Fri Jul 05, 2013 2:24 pm

Hi guys,
Today was my first CT scan, without being incarcerated,( already in the hospital) full of drugs. I was feeling pretty good when I brought in my own fleece pants, and tee shirt, as I did not have to change into a gown with my butt hanging out. Funny the things you learn after $450,000.00 of treatment :D Well previous to this I had only had PET scans on an outpatient basis. Oh yea, and a couple of colonoscopies and flex sigmoid tests. I got through the banana flavored barium drinks, yes that's plural, and did just fine with the iodine infusion. Feeling good I was only in the tube for a few minutes, instead of what seems to be an eternity with a PET scan, I got out of there and went to breakfast. I drank as much coffee as I could to wash down my omelet, toast and hash browns. In my wisdom, I did use the restroom before I left the restaurant. No one has ever stated on this forum, that barium and iodine is like Movieprep in reverse. If I had known that, I would have high tailed it home! So please forgive me for blaming y'all, but I'm damn sure making a record of it now
Regards,
Michael
P.S. By the time I got home (and had probably pissed off a few fast food employees along the way, using their restroom) onc says no cancer 8)

Hi Michael,

YIPPEEEEE for your great news! I'm so, so, so, so glad!

That's CRAZY no one had ever mentioned about the crapping after the scans, after all the talking about poop we do around here! I NEVER have one without taking LOMOTIL before-hand now. Then I have pretty much 24 hours of diarrhea anyway. So it goes, pal....so it goes.

Yea for the no cancer!! The barium always cleans me out but I didn't know if that was normal for everyone or not so I've never said. Oops! Hopefully, with your newly clean guts and NED status, you feel up to celebrating some!

God bless ~

No cancer, it is so nice and relieving. I think this barium and iodine problems after CT were just musing knowing that you are cancer free, bestnews always for all of us, when I read for someones good results it boost my optimistic level and I am always thankful for this forum and such info

Congratulations on continued NEDness! About the CT prep, yep, even I poop after it, which is saying a lot. Glad you had bathrooms available on the way!

Many happy returns on a clean scan! Dirty bathrooms are way better than dirty scans!

The first scan with contrast I had they didn't warn me either. I have to drive 30-40 miles between restroom stops and it hit me during that stretch. I made it but barely. It really made my stomach roll. Since that first one I think I've become used to it and it doesn't do that.
Male Age 53. Dx CC with numerous liver mets 6/23/12. Colon res 6/24/12. Started folfox 7/24/12. Added avastin 8/27/12. CT 12/27/12 still showing shrink. Took 17 rounds of FOLFOX. Then 5-FU + Avastin. Switched to Irinotecan for 1 yr. CEA rose to >400. Switched to Vectibix 2/18/15. CEA decreasing. Scans show some growth in liver mets. Lung Mets stable to shrinking.

Michael, I'm so happy for your results. I had my CT scan on Tues. Afterwards I asked the guy if any of this would have an effect on the bowels and he nonchalantly says it can cause diarrhea. Well needless to say on the way home I passed gas and went "oops" not gas. Screwed up my system for two days. I was up til 3am on Wed nite pooping - yeah CT scans. I don't get my results til Tuesday.

Congrats! You made me laugh. :D
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 13 years NED). Is this real life?
