Hi Tiff~

I'm so happy to hear Ty has stones and not cancer, but I'm sorry he is having so much pain. My sister had one as well and her face was pretty swollen. She was on an antibiotic and a pain reliever. She did see an ENT and where her stone was located, her doc said surgery would have been too risky. Hers was on the side of her face. Not under her chin. I hope the ENT can help him out.

Hugs,

Are there any procedures to help break them up like they can do for other stones now? I hope the specialist can help him.

Years ago I got a nasty thyroglossal duct cyst. I looked like an alien - it was so huge. And it hurt a lot. It resolved on its own within a few weeks. I cannot imagine going through it longer than that. If it doesn't resolve, then they have to remove the duct. You aren't supposed to have them anyway - they are supposed to disappear before birth. Guess mine didn't... I am lucky that I only had one flare up and never needed the surgery.

Tiff
One thing they suggested to me was to suck on lemon drops (not sure why sugar free but that's what they said). It helps stimulate the production of saliva and that can help dislodge the stone. Drinking lots of fluid to avoid dehydration helps as well (similar to kidney stones I guess). Hopefully the docs showed Ty exactly where the gland opening is so that when doing massage he can attempt to push the stone in the 'right' direction.
Also, and this actually was somewhat painful, you might ask about using a waterpik to help break up the stone....IF you can blast it from inside your mouth BUT.....talk with a dentist/doc about it and make sure it is safe. It was something that was suggested to me. I was also able to actually help 'squeeze' mine out but it was located in the upper gland...not in the same location as Ty's.
Good luck. Keep using the heat/massage...hopefully Ty will pass the dang stones rather quickly.

Jaynee - I was going to suggest this...the ENT told my sister to eat/drink anything with lemon. Anything to produce more saliva, the better.

Just wanted to let you guys know how this turned out. We saw the ENT specialist at University of Missouri and he immediately said surgery was indicated. Tyler will have the whole gland removed with stones on May 15th. They did a CT scan and chest x-ray and we hope to get those results soon. Thanks you guys, for all your supportive responses!

Glad to hear you finally have a resolution. I hope that they can give Ty something to at least ease the pain until the surgery.
Best of luck.
