Banana Skins

Postby westie68 » Fri Mar 08, 2013 4:27 pm

This is going to sound way out there, but here goes. I remember getting these horrible, painful anus sores when I was on folfirinox and having to
apply goopy diaper rash. I may have to go back on folfirinox and was talking to my nurse about it. She said she has a patient on folfox who gets the same
awful painful sores (an older lady) and she uses banana skins on them. Now, I forgot to ask whether the inside part or the outside part next to the skin, and how long to leave them on, sorry. But the nurse says they seem to work on her patient. A much less messier option than the diaper rash. I'm a botanist and there might be something in banana skins that is therapeutic like that. I'll check it out.
Worth a try though.

Once, long ago, I tried "mellow yellow", which is the inner part of a banana skin, toasted in an oven, then smoked in a pipe. It does give a high, but one that might be akin to the effect of asphyxiation.

Hope this helped.

I've never heard of using banana skins in that way. I use them for compost.

I know what you mean about the goopy diaper rash though. When I was living with my reversal (I now have a permanent colostomy); I found that Calmoseptine was great if I could leave it on my butt for awhile - like overnight. It had wonderful healing qualities. But if I was having frequent bowel movements, I would use A&D because it's more like Vaseline and although not as soothing as Calmoseptine, it was easier for wiping/cleaning up. The Calmoseptine was more paste like and harder to clean up after.

I hope this helps a little - and good luck with the banana peels if you decide to give it a try. I would guess it's not the outer skin of the banana - I don't see how that would soak into the tissue(?)

I've been spraying my butt with the "second skin" stuff that is used to control skin irritation around the stoma. It's the same stuff used to help burn victims. So far so good....no butt burning as I work my way through reversal recovery.

I read recently that rubbing banana peels on your teeth for 2 minutes will whiten them. Claims mineral properties of potassium, magnesium and manganese. Maybe those minerals will help your situation.

Hey Greg, many moons ago I tried smoking banana skins, but wasn't as well versed as you, we tried crushing up the whole skin and rolling it in ciggie papers - needless to say it was a disaster, the cigarette papers had moe holes than a sieve....;)

I recently heard that coconut oil is supposed to be good for those nose sores. My husband uses a netti pot twice a day which he says helps a lot with chemo related nose issues. To ward off mouth sores, he rinses with biotene mouthwash also.

My issue now is neuropathy besides the sore mouth. Has anyone tried banana peels for neuropathy? I think I'll try it on my feet. What do I have to loose?
Male Age 53. Dx CC with numerous liver mets 6/23/12. Colon res 6/24/12. Started folfox 7/24/12. Added avastin 8/27/12. CT 12/27/12 still showing shrink. Took 17 rounds of FOLFOX. Then 5-FU + Avastin. Switched to Irinotecan for 1 yr. CEA rose to >400. Switched to Vectibix 2/18/15. CEA decreasing. Scans show some growth in liver mets. Lung Mets stable to shrinking.

Hi: I wish someone would try the banana skins! I agree, it must be the inner white part. I don't see my nurse until next week but I'll get more information then - as someone said, what the heck, it can't hurt! At least the overall shape is right!

Re the neuropathy. I used the following supplements for the cold intolerance - didn't get that - and it may have helped neuropathy as I really didn't get that either: L-Glutamine (5 grams in a smoothie/day), alpha lipoic acid (3 pills/day), Vit B6 (1 pill a day), and Calcium:Magnesium (1 pill a day). I just bought an ointment recommended by the great Bobby Orr (NHL hockey player) and just released as an over the counter rub on. I bought the one for nerve pain because I have a trapped nerve at C6. But it is specially formulated for folks with diabetes and fibromyalgia. It is called LivRelief Extra Strength Nerve Pain Relief. Check the website: http://www.livrelief.com. It is Canadian. And fairly expensive $27. Apparently, it was only available by prescription but now is OTC. It didn't work on my impinged nerve because it is mainly for at the skin pain. Worth a try I guess.
