Looking for inspirational or happy tunes

Postby cptmac » Fri Jul 18, 2008 3:36 pm

I'm updating my I-Pod and always give myself an extra treat on my birthday, which is the day I was dx'd with Stage IV.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Here are my suggestions for others who may be looking.

Best Days by Graham Colton
Cry Holy by Sonic Flood
Jack's Mannequin - pretty much the whole CD.

Well, there's always "Don't worry, be happy!"

Jimmy Buffet always makes me smile.

Check out Yo-Yo Ma's "Obrigado Brazil" CD. It's just amazing. I had it playing when the surgeons rolled in for my surgery this week and they asked me to keep it playing.

the one good thing about music, when it hits, you feel no pain

here's a few suggestions, i'd imagine some rolled eyes will occur, but open minds all ~
the power of music should never be underestimated and should always be over-utilized!!

forever young - bob dylan (not rod stewart's song) preferably from "the last waltz"
i remember you - dylan
i believe in you - dylan
lively up yourself, jammin', stir it up, redemption song - bob marley
mother & child reunion - paul simon
graceland (the entire cd) - paul simon
sugar magnolia - grateful dead (from the cd "europe '72")
revival - allman brothers band
Bayou Boogie (the entire cd) - Beausoleil; an awesome band from Louisiana.
I think it is physically impossible to not get happy while listening to this.

all avail for mp3 download from amazon

i would really love to hear suggestions from anyone else.

For something a little more meditative--
- 'Lunamuse' and several of the other cuts on Ocean Moon, by Kay Gardner.
Gardner was a flutist; the music has haunted me since I first heard it playing in the darkroom in college 30 years ago. You might have to buy the CD to get it; Ocean Moon was remastered and combined her first LP Moon Circles with some of her later stuff.
- Pretty much anything you can find by Tim Janis...hear his music one day on TV and after 5 minutes, had to find it and buy it. Orchestral, with a lot of celtic and inspirational roots
- Moya Brennan, her 'Two Horizons' album

For just general feeling good--
- The Changer and the Changed, by Cris Williamson (pretty much the whole album). This is a very strength in unity set of music
- No Secrets by Carly Simon
- Melissa Etheridge's album, The Road Less Travelled, with 'I Run for Life' -- again, pretty much the whole album.
- Alison Krauss and Union Station, Gravity from Lonely Runs Both Ways
- Taking the Long Way (the whole album) by the Dixie Chicks
- Road Tested by Bonnie Raitt (all of it)
- Miles of Aisles by Joni Mitchell
- Eye to the Telescope, KT Tunstall (Suddenly I See...)

I'll go check out my favorite playlists--I have one when I want to meditate and one when I want to be revved up, and they both stay on my iPod all the time.

cptmac, I am reallly into Christian music. I had never heard of Sonic Flood, so I checked out a couple of their songs on Youtube. I like them a lot. I like Casting Crowns, as well. And I like my sister's praise and worship band. Josh Groban "You Raise Me Up" is a personal favorite, as well. Thanks for the tip on Sonic Flood.

I am a music fiend so a list would be hard to do...would contain my whole collection !!!!

BUT... whenever I hear the lead in chords of Jimi Hendrix "All Along The Watchtower" I stop and listen. It is never background music for me. I am caught in that moment and let everything else go for a while (3 minutes and fifty seven seconds to be exact !). Lots of other songs as well, but that one....always.

Cheers

Since some of my favorite music isn't exactly breaking the top 10 or showing up on MTV's JumpStart, and since it might not be in iTunes, I thought links might help. I was actually surprised to find nearly all of Cris Williamson's catalog, including her groundbreaker Changer and the Changed in Amazon.com's mp3 download section. You used to have to get her stuff from her website, or alternative music stores. But this way you can check out clips from the album:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_dmusi ... ed&x=0&y=0

And here is a link to some of my all-time favorite Kay Gardner pieces. Lunamuse, InnerMood I and II, and Moonflow are hypnotic:

Enjoy!

Right Now Van Halen
I will Remember You Sara McLachlan
All This Time Sting
Pop Goes the World Men without Hats
In My Daughters Eyes Martina McBride
Eye of the Tiger Survivor
Fall Into Me Emerson Drive

This is a list I've been compiling to use as background music for our families 2008 Holiday DVD with photos. We do this every year. Cancer has played such a role in our lives this year that I wanted some songs that touched me in some way. "Pop Goes the World" was just for fun - no cancer association there! :-)

speaking of hypnotic : Deuter's "Garden of the Gods", the melodic drama of Tibetan Buddhist chanting and surpisingly, for me, Gregorian chants...many versions !
