Question about omentum removal during HIPEC

Postby heartbrokendaughter » Thu Feb 14, 2013 9:27 am

Hello all. I am hoping someone can help clear up my confusion. My mom had hipec in October, she just had her first CT scan post surgery and the report says "the omentum is partially thickened measuring up to 10mm." I am very confused by this as we were told her ometum was removed during the surgery. Does anyone know what this means? How can the omentum be thickened if it was removed? does that mean it really wasn't removed? I appreciate any insight as I know a lot of you are very knowledgeable and I have no idea what this means. Thank you so much in advance.

Yes, I thought if they removed it, that was it. As in they always remove all of it at one time. When Lauren had her surgery where they discovered the peritoneal mets, they removed the omentum as it had mets in it. Then it was never mentioned again in the three following surgeries she had. Did the radiologist have access to the information from the surgery that the omentum was removed?
Mom to 28 yo daughter
colectomy 2/22/10, stage 3C, signet cell
7/2011 peritoneal mets
HIPEC September 2012, difficult recovery

There is the greater (apron) omentum and lesser omentum. Funnily enough am in my hospital bed recovering from HIPEC as we speak but I'm sure there are two omentums...

There are two omentums and they are not always removed in their entirety (especially the lesser) depending on how the surgery gues, the person's individual anatomy, etc. Whatever the radiologist is seeing, this close to HIPEC could just as easily be post-op changes and inflammation. What's your HIPEC surgeon think of it? Many radiologists are not well versed in reading post-HIPEC anatomy and may struggle with it. My own radio clinic admits such and I'm always more interested in what my surgeon says when he gets his eyeballs on the scan.

well,, I learned something today...had no idea there were two omentums! "A Tale of Two Omentums"..... "Torn between two omentums..."

Too many pain meds making this girl silly. How is your Mom doing otherwise?

The HIPEC doctor should have given you a report detailing the surgery. I'd dig for that.
