Maia - Apex is not far at all from Durham, maybe only 25 miles, but 45 minutes or so in traffic. Dr. Powderly is in Huntersville, NC, just outside of Charlotte. I honestly don't know whether your friend would meet the criteria or not, but Dr. Powderly seems very open to talking to anyone. It couldn't hurt.

Sharon - I think about Brady and our other heroes a lot. This particular drug wasn't available at all during his struggle. The earlier versions of this drug (by Bristol-Myers-Squibb and some other company) didn't seem to be efffective at all on colon cancer. I have no idea what makes the Genetech drug different.

I know this could fall apart tomorrow, but I'm here today, and I don't feel bad. What a change from the previous years!

Yay for you!!! And thanks for the report.

It's too soon for me to have anything to report yet, except that I have zero side effects(!), but I'll report in as soon as I have something.

Dianne,
Thanks for letting everyone know about this. We just got back from talking clinical trials in Nashville. They do a lot of tumor testing at Sarah Cannon. Also waiting to hear if the avastin arm of your trial opens up.
All my best.

You do realize, Fletch, that I was hoping you could explain it to ME! It makes perfect sense when Dr. P. is talking, but far less sense when I am trying to explain it.
I think I said earlier that this Genetech drug was the "third generation" of these PD-1 study drugs. I know one of the other trials was by Bristol-Myers-Squibb. I think one was GSK. There is far more available about the BMS trial because that work is the farthest along. I know from Dr. P., however, that the BMS drug was not generally effective on CRC, while the Genetech drug seems to be having good response. The articles I can find usually reference melanoma because that seemed to be a strength of the BMS drug. Here are some of the articles I have found on the BMS drug, and PD-1 in general. Let me know what you think, please. I also found a patent application by Genetech for the PD-1 drug, but I think it is written in Greek.

I am sad to report that I called today and was told that they have changed the protocol and are no longer accepting CRC patients for the single agent trial. I am not sure about the trial that includes Avastin. Sad sigh.......

Niki,
Is that just at the AZ location?
There's also Stanford. Not close, but maybe it would be doable.

Niki,
I have to call the clinic Monday for my lab results. I'll ask about the single-agent trial. Perhaps I misunderstood Dr. P., but I thought he said they wanted CRC patients.
I'm sorry about the disappointing news.

Thanks Diane. Would you mind asking if they are accepting CRC patients for the trial you are on? We are willing to travel.

And yes they told me that they will not be enrolling any more CRC patients at all sites.

Dianne,
I think the single agent trial is different than the one you're on. Yours has two arms, one with folfox and one with avastin.

Is there an arm for this drug with Folfox? Matt's onc mentioned that one of his options is to return to Folfox.
