Ldh values?- Lactate dehydrogenase

Postby Cb75 » Mon Dec 31, 2012 3:13 pm

I had some extra time todAy while receiving my 7 Th round of folfox and decided to study my blood test results from the past few months. I noticed that my LDL levels have been increasing slightly since starting folfox. The last one taken at the beginning of December was elevated above the 'normal' range. I did some preliminary research which is pretty conflicting as to what this can or may indicate. Does anyone have any insight? Are you tested regularly for this? Can the increase be a result of chemo? Thanks in advance.

My cholesterol was increased and yes the doctors said it was due to chemo.

Min did also but 18 months out from chemo all my lipids are back to normal for me - nd my hdl always remained high so the ratio was good.

It's different than cholesterol. Its called lactate dehydrogenase. What I have read is very conflicting. Apparently it goes up when there is cell death and tissue damage. Some of what I have read is that it can be an I dictator to tumor growth, or it can be an indicator of cancer cells dying, or of inflammation, or liver damage... I am very co fused and a bit freaked out. Cea is not a good indicator for me and now I am wondering if this is an indicator? My last two scans have been clear. My onc never mentioned Lin. I'm curious if others on here have any information on it. I will ask my oncologist, but my next appointment isn't for a few weeks and of course the office is closed for part of the holidays.

You can follow up your readings on this site Lab Tests Online which will give a good overview of any test you plug into the search menu.
LDH is part of the usual liver screen I had run during chemos and my first choice would be that changes are in fact due to the chemo. Trends are often more revealing than single values...AND with more chemo => more liver changes...BUT... always check/ask your own Oncs for their take on any screening test changes you may encounter. When I was on chemo I had a whole range of changes I was watching and they were all normalized by a few months after I was done. CEA is NO marker for me so I quit worrying about it a long time ago.

...Besides it is New Year's eve, so you should really have been watching the Canadian Juniors kick hockey butt ... ehhhh !!!

I am/did/will !!!

No worries. I thought it was LDL at first as well on the blood test, until I googled it.

I was just looking at the LDH tonight for something unrelated, and ran across this thread. My dad's oncologist said that they used the LDH as a cancer marker, but he did not elaborate.

On the flip side, I found this - different chemo protocol than FOLFOX, but it appears that an increased LDH in some patients might be signs of effective chemo: http://www.asco.org/ASCOv2/Meetings/Abs ... ctID=88635

So it looks like an increased LDH might go either way.

Just looked at Dad's values. It was always within the normal region and fairly consistent during chemo, but after his liver resection, the LDH did drop by 50 points, and stayed at that level for the next year. It has inched up a bit since then, hoping it's nothing to worry about.
