Colon/Liver Resection and Adjuvant Chemo

Postby andy21 » Sat Nov 10, 2012 4:10 pm

What is the efficacy of Adjuvant Chemo after Colon/Liver resection?
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa043116

As per article above, Xeloda is one of common adjuvant chemos given for 24 weeks.
But some members on the forum did not get any adjuvant chemo at all. Is this done, so if there is a recurrence later, Xeloda etc. are still effective?

Some options are: (Wonder on what basis doctors decide)
(a) No Adjuvant Chemo
(b) 24 weeks Xeloda
(c) 2-3 months of Xelox with Avastin
(d) Fudor/Folfiri (with HAI Pump)

Would it not make more sense to kill all microscopic CC cells immediately after Surgery with Adjuvant Chemo?

Thanks

I had a liver resection in August. I am currently on Folfox6. I did not have any chemo before my liver surgery.

I'm having one soon. How long were you in the hospital? How long was your recovery?

I was in the hospital six days. All in all it wasn't too bad. The incision is quite large. After about three weeks I was feeling pretty good, not back to normal but able to go for longer walks, I even went to a wedding. However, I will say that I do have some aching and discomfort in the are of the incision from time to time and I am now three months post surgery. I think this is normal given that it is pretty major surgery, the scar is large and there must be quite a bit is scar tissue.

Hi, Andy

I suppose each onc has his own opinion and based on your own research and support.
Personally I think chemo post surgery is well known that helps to kill spread cells hidden or spreaded during the surgeries.
So, I like option (c).
Respect to option (d) it has a permanent relationship with your liver disease, if you have micro mets in the entire liver, I surely I would go with this option.

In my father case the beast of his old onc (is not more in the team) made a big mistake, he did not use chemo bw the first surgery colon and the second surgery liver... in the meantime my father was 6 months without chemo.... it is not a mistake, it is an horror.

A hug for you

After Dad's liver resection, he had either 2 or 3 rounds of xeloda alone. He was also taking his supplement (IP6). That was in 2009, and, knock wood, no recurrence. He does still take the IP6. His mets were over 95% dead when resected, which may be significant.
Dad, stage IV CC, mets to liver, 2007-2008
surgery, Xelox, and IP-6
NED summer 2009
surveillance stopped summer 2014, due to age
died 1/2018 at age 88, from Parkinson's and respiratory infection
(Parkinson's triggered by one of his cancer surgeries and/or chemo)
