Oh Janet. My love and prayers to you and your family. I second all that's been said. It's shocking how quickly the person can go from functional to 2-weeks to live. This is the hardest, hardest thing, and you may be kind of numb right now.

I don't know if there is a "right" thing to do during a crisis like this, but mundane tasks can usually wait unless you find comfort in doing them. I know that if someone offers to help you, let them. I'm sure you've told Lauren how much you love her; just keep doing that. Touch her, talk to her. At some point you may need to tell her she has your permission to go.

Sending you virtual support and (((((hugs))))

Jan, I have wanted to respond to your post since shortly after you posted ... but I am too hearbroken and so shocked to find words adequate yo express how truly sad I feel for what you, Lauren and the rest of your family are going through. So I'll just say this: you and Lauren are constantly on my mind and in my prayers. Her situation was so hopeful just a month ago ... I hope things turn for the better soon. Doctors are wrong a lot - I hope this is another example of that.

Nothing is ever what you expect. It sounds like Hospice and COmfort care is the next step. I didn't know that IV fluids were given by hospice. I've never seen that. Pain medication definetly. Taking her home would be nice but it is very scary and you become the sole caregiver with guidence from a nurse. Symptoms like pain may be hard to manage. In patient hospice is always something to consider. Or Sometimes it's nice to know that you can take her home and have something like a hospice house if it gets to scarry. I know that as her mom you will make sure she is comfortable. I'm so sorry to hear about all of this. It's not fair that she is so young. My prayers for strength and pain control for all of you.

My gut says that there are miracles and we can benefit from them. Sadly, my head tells me that there are times when we have to dig deep and just "do what has to be done." Planning is not an admission of failure or loss of hope, as another has said. Planning can also be a way to offer the loved one a chance to be part of the end of life experience, should that be the end game. I have not personally experienced what you are going through and can not imagine how you must feel.

You are all actively in my prayers...wish I could be there to give you a big ((HUG)).

I have been lurking for 3 years. I am sorry you are in this stage. My wife died after 5 days in hospice, and we had 3 where she was able to respond. Yes, it can turn around that fast.
Please talk to her while you can.

Best

I have no experience with this sort of stuff - I wish I could help Lauren - I can only imagine what you are both going through - as if it were me and my daughters (similar ages though a little older than lauren)

All I can do is wish for the best journey and outcome - whatever that may be - for Lauren

Be strong

Jan,
This is such horrible news, but I think it's time to prepare for comfort for her. I look back over our situation and I wanted more time, more chemo and wanted to keep fighting, Kevin did too he told me, but now that he is gone and I look back at the videos of him, I can see the pain he was in, I see the discomfort in his eyes and it kills me. I didn't see this at all at that time, I think I was so wrapped up in keeping him alive that I didn't see the pain. I can only say, whatever happens which ever way this goes, make sure she is comfortable, no pain or suffering as much as you possibly can. I know you want that too, so I shouldn't even be saying this. I just had to share this as I didn't see any of this, I was blind I guess with my own anxiety, fear, loss etc. I thought those videos would be great to have, but I watch them now and it is heartbreaking.

She will be in a better place...

Love,
Lisa

Today was a little scary. Lauren's fever returned, her urine output decreased, her bp shot up and she was really agitated (still on the vent). The doctors explained it had to do with her acids (?) caused by the stuff in her abdomen. They said they didnt think she could breathe on her own. Maybe never. We were really starting to worry, it seemed like she was declining. But then this afternoon a bunch of her friends came by and talked to her and told stories. Somehow hEr fever dropped, her bp normalized and her urine output turned normal. The power of friends and prayers! Now they are talking about getting her off the vent tomorrow.

Thanks guys for all your positive thoughts - much much appreciated!
