Lauren dehydrated back in the hospital-updated

Postby janklo » Thu Sep 20, 2012 8:37 pm

Poor Lauren, she got out of of the hospital from HIPEC Tuesday (6 days after surgery), feeling pretty good. Went home about 6, a friend drove her and then got her prescripts, made her potatos and bread for dinner and she actually talked on the phone with her boss all evening. Yesterday she was nauseous and everything she tried came back up even the anti-nausea pills. So she called the doc and got a liquid nausea med. A friend brought it over and she took some and then he made her rice for dinner and she kept that down with Sprite. She sounded better last night. Today severe nausea again, I could tell her throat sounded raw. She also had a temp of 101. She kept trying to call her doctor's office around lunch time, but you know how that can be. So she had a neighbor take her to the ER and they took her right in. They said she was SEVERELY dehydrated and so they are keeping her overnight. She has an IV and is taking sips of water and her fever is gone. Otherwise, all tests came back ok.

Since we can't be there (we are 10 hours away), she is going to ask the doctors about getting a home health care agency aide to come by her house every day and check on her and make sure she is ok. Otherwise she has to rely upon a network of friends, all in their 20s and 30s who work different hours and aren't well versed in medicine. I think that will be helpful and I hope her insurance will pay but otherwise she can afford it (she got a settlement from a former employer who fired her for cancer). That will make it easier for all of us!

UPDATE - Friday, Sept. 21 - The doctors think the problem is the built-up stomach acid so they are probably going to put in the old "ng tube" in to drain that stuff out and that will make her feel much better and stop the nausea and vomiting.

Sorry to hear that Lauren is having problems.
Hopefully she will be better after Hydration.
Maybe there is a CC member living near her that can stop by sometime?
Where do you/she live?

She lives in Dallas in the "Uptown" area and she is in Baylor University Med Center. We live in Omaha, NE. I know, if there was someone here in Nebraska being treated, I would certainly do anything I could to assist them!

Sorry she's feeling icky. :( I live an hour away from where I was being treated. I was able to do fluids at home myself through my port and a nurse came once a week. It was so nice. Hopefully something can bee worked out for her best comfort.

Sorry to hear that Janet. Home health really helped my husband after his surgery. It was weekly and not daily but I know they do both and his insurance was great and covers 100 visits per year (which we hope to never need) and it's a lot cheaper for them than inpatient and ER care if she had to make an argument.

Good thoughts her way. Hope you are hanging in there too as mom. It's tough when our kids are sick and this has been more than enough for a lifetime.

Pain pills caused me to have horrific nausea so I stopped them after only 2 doses. It took about 5 days for me to be able to keep any foods down after that but I drank gallons of sweet tea and water, then moved to some Ensure type drinks.

Hope she's back home soon and continues to heal!

Hope she can get home soon, and have some professional support as well. What a hard thing to have to go through without someone on site to keep an eye on things. Anyone in the Seattle area ever finds themselves in that position, I would be happy to help. Ann Alexandria

Sorry Lauren is having some complications. I remember you posting Lauren was thinking of going back to work next week - couldn't believe she'd even consider it! She has been through a lot and really just needs to take the time to heal. Lots of rest, lots of protein. With the NG tube, she should be better in no time.

Uh, oh, not the NG tube. I know it isn't fun to put that thing in, but Jake looked at it as a friend ultimately since it kept his nausea away. He never complained about it in the six days he had it because he was so grateful to not feel sick.

Hope Lauren is feeling better now and is able to go home soon to her familiar surroundings. Home is healing for sure.
