Miralax prep

Postby Bev G » Fri Sep 14, 2012 7:31 pm

Hi kids,

Would someone take a minute and explain the Miralax bowel prep to me, please? My beloved former husband is having his prostate removed next week (CANCER!!!! it's everywhere!!) He sent me his instructions before my last colonoscopy, and I, of course, lost them. Now he needs them back, and I can't find them, so could someone please help me out?

Thanks a million!

Best that I can remember from mine was 64 oz of gatorade mixed with miralax the night before and magnesium sulfate a few hours before test.

Bev, I found this online.

I hope it helps and I hope his results are good. I know a lot of guys who have had the procedure and are doing well.

For my July prep, I took 4 Dulcolax about 4 p.m., then began drinking the Miralax mixture at 8 p.m. Since it was a split prep, I bought two 32 oz. bottles of a flavored vitamin water, dumped the Miralax into a large measuring container to make sure I split it equally, and mixed up two separate containers. The instructions said 8 oz. at 8 p.m. and again every 15-20 minutes until 32 oz. was consumed. For the other half, I got to get up at 4 a.m. and do the same thing, 8 oz. at a time.

In previous years when the prep was not split, I think I took the pills about 1:00 or 2:00 and began the drinking routine about 6:00, going through the whole 64 oz. (Not my fave, but I think that's what I'll have to do for my surgery in a couple of weeks - boo.)

Hope this is helpful. Best of luck to him with the procedure - a clean result, please, Lord!

Bev... my instructions were about the same as the link above. However, I was told to start the Miralax at 5 pm.

Starting at 8 pm seems too late for a morning appointment and would not be cleaned out by then. Don't forget to make him drink lots of water as well until midnight.

Good Luck!

Hmmm, let me recall... at 1PM 1bottle mag citrate and 4 dulcolax. At 3PM 1/2 mixture of miralax with 32 oz of preferred liquid, 8 oz. every 15 minutes. At 6PM 1/2 mixture of miralax with 32 oz of preferred liquid, 8 oz. every 15 minutes. At 8 PM, 1 bottle of mag citrate. May your ex have a pleasant evening  . Of course I had to add the dulcolax and mag citrate, as those were my orders, and also I knew you might want a crescendo, for your dear ex.
Warm regards,
Michael

P.S. I had an 8 AM scope.

Good Lord some of those instructions are lengthy... Mine was pretty simple. Low Fiber diet beginning 2 days before. 2 bisacodyl tablets 6pm night before, followed by drinking the miralax/gatorade (full bottle/64oz gatorade) over the next 2 hours. Wrap up with 2 more bisacodyl tablets, clear liquids the rest of the way. Frankly, these strict timing rules for everything is more the result of the docs having to tell you SOMETHING. The goal is to shit gatorade the evening before the exam. Get there however possible :)

Just a question-does the liquid have to be Gatorade? I haven't done Miralax, but after the preps I did, the taste of Gatorade makes me gag.

Any kind of electrolyte-containing drink is fine. They just don't want you dehydrating yourself by doing it with only water.

I used Sour Melon (green) PowerAde last time and it worked the best. Put in the freezer to get it very cold. Then I didn't actually follow the 15 minute schedule, but instead took the 32 ounces out into the yard to walk around while I slammed it, so I wasn't focused on drinking the prep, but on something else. I slammed the whole thing down in 10 minutes. Then the next hour I did the same with the other 32 ounces. (So I guess I didn't follow directions exactly with the every 15 minute thing - but drawing it out like that puts way too much focus on choking it down.) My son said it was a breeze - he did like me and just drank it all down at once - didn't bother him at all. My husband loves Gatorade, but he doesn't like being forced to drink the prep, so it is a bit tougher mentally for him. My parents had done the MoviePrep, and GoLightly in the past and much preferred the Gatorade prep.

Hi Bev. I can't help you with instructions for the Miralax prep., but I did just want to say good luck to your former husband with his prostrate removal. My husband had his removed in March, and I couldn't believe it when they gave him the instructions for the bowel prep! We had no idea he'd have to do that for the prostate removal, although once they explained why it made sense. They had him prep. with Ducolax tablets and magnesium citrate. Of course, he put me to shame and was able to chug the mag. cit. right down. I always start gagging trying to drink it. I told him he's had good practice from all the beer he's drunk. Of course, he's leaking like a sieve, so drinking beer is out of the question for now.

My husband comes from a large family, and I used to think, well, okay, there's a lot of cancer in my family, but at least there's none in his (immediate family). Now, he's the first (and only one we hope and pray) to get it. And he's young for prostate cancer, only 58.

I dont know if too late but these are the instructions that I had for mine- typing from the instructions given by doctor. These instructions are for a 10:30am colonoscopy.:

5 days prior to procedure stop taking any of the following- aspirin, cournadin, ticlid, warfarin, persantine, plavix, aggrenox, dipyrideamole, advil, aleve, nupin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, vitamin C, Gingo, Iron

3 days prior to procedure do not consume any buling agents such as metamucil, citrucel. Avoid food with small seeds, breads with poppy or sesame seed, preserves, berries, kiwi, tomato, any fruit or vegetable with small seed that cannot be removed prior to eating. No nuts.

You may take Tylenol.

Purchase-
1 box gas x pills
1 box dulcolax laxative tablets 5 mg (not stool softners or suppositories)...you will need 4 tablets
3- (119 gm) bottles of Miralax
You will need to purchase a total of 3-32 ounce bottles of iced tea, crystal light, lemondate, water or cranberry juice. NO RED flavors are allowed except cranberry juice.

On day BEFORE procedure you will remain on clear liquid diet....NO SOLIDS. You may have beef, chx and veggie broth. You may have clear fruit juices like apple, apple combos, cranberry, grape juice, etc. Black coffee and tea are ok with sugar but NO milk or dairy creamers. You can have coke, pepsi, sprite. You may have popsicles, itialian ice, hard candies like lifesavers. NO red.

At 4pm day before take 4 dulcolax laxative tablets

At 5pm day before mix (1) 119 gm bottle of miralax into (1) 32 ounce bottle of your choice of clear liquid. Shake well. wait until liquid fully disolved. Take 2 gas x pills then begin drinking a measured 8 ounce glass every 15-20 min until you finish all 32 ounces (usually 4 glasses).

At 8pm day before mix (1) 119 gm bottle of miralax into (1) 32 ounce bottle of your choice of clear liquid. Shake well. wait until liquid fully disolved. Take 2 gas x pills then begin drinking a measured 8 ounce glass every 15-20 min until you finish all 32 ounces (usually 4 glasses). (SOME DOCS SKIP THIS 8PM BUT FOR ME THEY WANTED EXTRA CLEANLINESS CAUSE I HAD A SESSILE FLAT POLYP)

At 5:30am on day of procedure mix (1) 119 gm bottle of miralax into (1) 32 ounce bottle of your choice of clear liquid. SHake well. wait until liquid fully dissolved. Take 2 gas x pills then being drinking a measured 8 ounce glass every 15-20 min until you finish 32 ounces (usually 4 glasses).

You may continue to drink any clear liquids listed above until 9 am on day of your procedure.
