at the five year mark a cancer patient survival rate is statistically the same as a non-cancer patient. So that is the basis for the five year mark as it was explained to me.

Another T3N1 survivor, next month will be three years since I was diagnosed.

Hello everyone
On Thursday we have  surgery.
I am trying to be as optimistic as possible
It's not easy ....
At the end of the surgery will be performed using the da Vinci robot
Dad will have a fixed stoma for life :-(
Although i understand its better in terms of chances of recurrence.

I'll update later

hi Oren, my children have helped me so much, just by caring about me. By learning about your father's disease and by letting him know you over him, you are doing more good than you could possibly imagine.

hope recovery is going smoothly. Make sure he gets up and walks as soon as the doctor allows. This will help get the bowels moving and hopefully limit his stay in the hospital.

Adjusting to an ostomy takes some time, but eventually it will become second nature.

Saying prayers for a quick recovery for your Dad Oren. Ostomy is a big adjustment, but I can tell from going back and reading your original posts...your Dad is a fighter and is up for this next challenge in his life. I'm a survivor, check my signature line, it is NOT easy but the stronger you are for your Dad, the stronger he will be as well.

Please keep us posted. Get him to walk, walk, walk, even when he says no.

Glad to hear the surgery went well! He will adjust to life with the stoma. It will take a bit of getting used to, but after that, he will barely notice it's there.

Hi Oren

I had LAR for a rectal cancer on 05 Jan and was scheduled to have a stoma. Fortunately I didn't need one as apparently I had a "very flexible left colon"

However in the weeks before LAR I accepted that I would have a Stoma and that this would be the device that was keeping me alive. Part of that process was talking to a good friend of mine and hearing that his Father had had a permanent Stoma for 45 years. He got it put in because of some non cancer issues a long time ago.

I know his Father and would not have known that he had a Stoma. Not only that but his Father is a bit of a play boy and always chases the ladies, even at his age.

I know you are concerned about your Father, but he will recover, get used to the Stoma and life will eventually resume a new normality.

Once your Father is up and moving again you (and he) will start to relax and then you can focus on getting him home, recovered and then on to the next challenge of the next treatment.

Honestly, it is a process you need to go through but he, and you, will be fine.
