My kevin is dying , hiccups help if you know

Postby las » Sun Sep 09, 2012 3:17 pm

My dearest Kevin is dying and we are at the very end, we have been doing the morphine and Ativan as prescribed. We have had he hospice people come out everyday. They tell me this sometimes happens, but we have no real method of helping him as we know it is very uncomfortable for him. He moans everytime it happens, has anyone of the caregivers experienced this with their love one?

We were doing so good with pain control and all recently, but can't help him with this now. They seem to last for about an hour then go away sometimes and then he start up again. Hospice doesn't seem to help in this regard.

I just want my husband to be comfortable at all times.

Love,

Lisa

Lisa,

I haven't had any direct experience but did a quick Google search and found many articles related to a hiccup side effect from slow-release morphine. Hopefully some other caregivers will soon see your question and be able to offer any help they have.

The only thing I can say to give you comfort is from our experience when my sweet mother was in her last hours from lung failure (after years of methotrexate treatment for rheumatoid arthritis); she was on a slow-release morphine drip for pain and would occasionally moan pitifully. After a time or two, we asked her if she were hurting, thinking we would ask to have the amount of morphine increased. Amazingly, she said, "No, not at all." So it's possible that Kevin's moans are involuntary, and he is not aware of any discomfort. I pray that's the case!

Hi Lisa'

There IS a drug they can give that will stop the hiccups, I am so sorry I don't know what it is called though. I hope someone else does and joins in.

My husband was admitted to the hospital a couple of years ago in excruiting pain, they gave him meds for the pain and he ended up with wicked hiccups. They were able to perscribe another drug that stopped them almost right away.

Perhaps a call to your doctor?

Good luck to you....I wish only calm, peace and gentle moments for Kevin.

It's called Thorazine, but I'm not sure when it is or is not prescribed - may want to ask your hospice nurse.

Thoughts are with you both!

Kevin can no longer swallow, we r talking probably hours before he passes, but it could be another day or so I guess, the signs are there, but only God knows when.

Hi Lisa -

I'm so sorry you guys have reached this point. I've been lurking for almost a year now and my heart goes out to you.

I just wanted to say, I just read a poston another CRC site where someone was given thorazine for hiccups. Apparently it worked wonders. Perhaps you could ask your doctors? I hope you're able to find something to help ease this for him - hiccups are annoying enough at the best of times, and I'm pretty sure this counts as the absolute worst of times :(

Lisa, I'm so sorry........ I'm so heart broken for you.

I looked up 'hiccups during hospice and found nurses asking about hiccups during end of life. There was no definitive answer but baclofen or thorazin were the meds given to stop them. Most nurses said it's a CNS problem and/ or renal failure.

Lisa,
Just saw your post and had to log on. When my husband was dying, he also had the hiccups. I am pretty sure that the drug they gave him to control it was Reglan. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. Unfortunately I have been there myself.
