I've had an NG tube placed twice while awake and completely alert--both times for blockages. There is nothing like the crunching sound the tube makes as it bends around your nasal passage and starts heading down your throat.

It always reminds me of the scene in Total Recall where Arnold Schwarzneggar takes that blipping red tracking thing out of his nose with that instrument.

Hope you're doing well.

ER tech said the doc wants an NG tube, he has prescibed a pain med. 1 hour later, the doc has prescibed an NG tube, we don't have the medication the doc prescribed, and I need you to go to a floor stat. Nuff said, %%@##$@%%^$#@. Hey Rick, I hope you get off those nourishing ice cubes, and into just some bad hospital food, pronto, or should I say stat? Luckily you seem to be doing alright in another catorgory I had trouble with. A catheter insertion without meds, is definately a lot more pleasant, but I'm glad I haven't heard it was needed in your case!

Hi Rick!

Are you lots and lots better today? I heard the switchboard in Heaven has had to sign on a couple of spare operators because of all the calls about you

If you're able, and have enough energy, could you give us an update about your excellent self? If you don't feel like it, no problem, I'll be happy to just keep praying!

Love to you,

Bev

SUCCESS!!!

The NG tube is still in place, but has been disconnected since 2 pm yesterday.
The nurses do 'residual' testing every 4 hours to verify there's less than 200 ml stomach contents (which in turn indicates that the obstruction has cleared enough to allow the stomach to empty). All tests have been less than 150.

No additional BM's since there hasn't been any food, but grand and glorious farts are frequent.
This seems to really please the med team, since gas is 'fresh' from the stomach and therefore also indicates clearing.

AND THEY JUST FED ME!!!!
Basic liquid diet: Jello, chicken broth, herbal tea (blah), OJ drink, and apple juice.
I've consumed the first 2: Very yummy after nothing for 6 days!

Med team will be around in an hour or so and let me know where we go from here.

Thank you all for the support and prayers and swinging chickens; the combination has apparently been successful.

Take Care!!!
