Brainstorming Time

Postby SkiFletch » Fri Apr 13, 2012 9:26 pm

Well folks, it's time for the annual Tshirt slogan brainstorming request :). For those of you that were not around in spring of 2011, every memorial day weekend since my diagnosis, my wife has gotten together a team of family and friends to run a race and fund-raise for colon cancer research. The race of choice is the Buffalo Marathon, which also has a half marathon, and a 4-person relay marathon component. Last year we had 3 teams of runners for the relay, and a handful of folks doing the full and/or half individually. Kelly's team actually came in 2nd in the co-ed relay  which is impressive as hell since thousands of people run this race, as it's a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Anyways, we do an informal "Team Fletch" for everyone running on my behalf and we always do Tshirts and/or dry-wicks. The front says Team Fletch 2012, and on the back we like to come up with an eye-popping slogan to try and get attention and to encourage awareness. We've had a few folks both on race-day and through out the year as people wear them ask about the shirt's meaning, and every time they do, it's a teachable moment about CRC. Kelly and I are not the most creative folks ever, so we're appealing to you guys as we have done every year for slogans for the back. Feel free to make them a little racey if you like, but above all, have fun with it. CRC offers plenty of double-entendre opportunities, so make the best of it. We want something that's gonna catch people's attention and make them think about CRC, screening, something like that. Looking forward to seeing what we can come up with this year :)

OK. One of the things that really bugs me about CRC events, is it's about the butt. Undy 5000. Get Your Rear in Gear. I'm working with our local Get Your Rear in Gear committee for our October event, and being a survivor, I told the other committee members (not survivors but those who've lost loved ones to CRC) that IT'S NOT ABOUT THE BUTT! I know after 6+ years of post-surgery/chemo/radiation effects, I'm mostly annoyed by and challenged with my guts. Eating is a challenge. Going about day-to-day things without worrying about when/where/how to eat because the guts don't work well anymore, is a challenge and time-limiting issue.

We get the humor with the whole butt thing, but really, it's not about that. It's about our GUTS! It's Not About the Butt....It's About the Gut! I dunno.....grasping here but if we take the butt out of the picture (or make it less of the focal point) perhaps it's more approachable and less oogy for the community, but still catchy. Our poor butts get all the blame.

Just a thought......

So true.

Although I kid you not, more than once I have been doing a half marathon or 10K and seen one of the marathoners drop a poo on the road  , out the leg of the shorts. Presumably a whole, intact, non cancer sufferer. There's gotta be a line there surely?

Although I have no creative suggestions, I heartily agree - humour is great if someone comes up with something really clever, but it should not have to be about our butts and it should not have to be funny, to make people feel comfortable. Its not a funny thing. Accepting it, and talking about it and being proud of being a survivor is not funny! It deserves respect.

Will put my thinking cap on.

There's no deadline Fanatik, the race isn't till Memorial day weekend (end of May) so there's some time. Dry-wick refers to the fabric of the shirt, the kind of stuff that pulls sweat off your skin and evaporates faster so you don't get horribly sticky when sweating.

And hey, if you guys can come up with stuff that isn't about butts, I'm all for it. I will say though that I'm not sure how many folks would have asked about the shirts if they did NOT have a humorous or thought-provoking slogan on the back. And if they never asked, I never would have had the ability to convince them to have a scope (some were over 50 and just too scared). The humor got them to drop their guard so to speak and talk about it. If even one of those folks gets a scope and has a polyp removed because of an interaction they had with someone from a funny tshirt, well then it was worth it IMO

Ski,
Was talking with my wife the other day. She asked why is the color for colon cancer not brown?

Something to work with but I am just waking up and drinking my coffee so as the meds start to work along with the caffeine, my mind wakes up, I'll be back with something.

Somewhat political, but thought provoking...

Picking up on Susan's GI theme...why not something like "My tummy hurts; does yours?"

Or into more traditional realms "Back at You!"

I recall suggesting this in the past: "The colon: - it's more than punctuation"

I'll keep thinking

What were the past slogans?

I like the punctuation theme Nicola mentioned.

Or "Ask me why my tummy hurt" - that could stimulate some conversations.
