March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Postby O Stoma Mia » Sat Feb 24, 2018 1:08 am

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month
http://coloncancercanada.ca/march-is-colon-cancer-awareness-month/
Colon Cancer Canada, with the support of celebrated Canadians, is launching the Colon Cancer Awareness Month with a hard hitting Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign that promotes the message that people need to “talk about it.”

Canadian celebrities involved in the campaign are Olympic medalist Adam van Koeverden, singing legend Anne Murray, hockey legend Darryl Sittler, actress Emmanuelle Chriqui, and actor Neil Crone. “They all have a personal story that brought them to Colon Cancer Canada – we just couldn’t be more proud of them,” explains Amy Elmaleh, Co-Founder of Colon Cancer Canada.

I have a question. Does total colectomy qualify you for disability and handicap parking etc in Canada.

I have had total colectomy. Generally, my BM are predictable and can be planned for. But every once in a while they act funny and I need to rush nearest washroom. You know the story.

Does anyone have any experience in this regards. Who decides if you are eligible for such things.

Unlikely from SPARC BC, unless your physical mobility is affected

Based on a physician’s recommendation, anyone with a permanent or temporary mobility limitation is eligible for a parking permit for people with disabilities. A physician must assess the individual, and confirm that the applicant is limited by one of more of the following conditions:

Applicant cannot walk any distance without assistance of another person or a mobility aid
Applicant cannot walk 100 metres without risk to health
Applicant has a disability that affects mobility, and the ability to walk specifically

Not sure where in Canada you are...but if you are in ontario Google "service Ontario accessible parking pass" and the form comes up. Most is mobility related reasons but the final option (part g) if I Remember correctly is where you may qualify - it refers to " functional" needs. I have heard of people with bathroom issues getting the permit. Speak with your family doctor. It's a pretty common form for them.

O/T kind of for... Colorectal CANUCKS !

Postby CRguy » Thu Apr 12, 2018 11:25 pm

I would be totally remiss, not a true Canuck ...
and certainly NOT CRguy .....
IF I did not acknowledge the recent tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team bus crash, in my home province.

I don't ever recall seeing such an outpouring of loving kindness, support and grief for a tragedy, the likes of which we have seen with
Humboldt Strong, wear your jersey and leave the lights on and the hockey sticks out

I have played and refereed since I could skate, coached, managed hockey teams
and been on executives of district hockey associations since I figured out I was never going to "the show" myself.

This past week / weekend reminded me of the unity we all have as Canadians, hockey folks and just plain human beings needing to reach out to our brothers and sisters in their time of need.

The GoFundMe for the Humboldt Broncos was over $9 Million last I saw
Tom Cochrane reworked his lyric for his epic song Big League https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDO6TA7FmJ8
and Smitty Kingston emerged as a YouTube sensation with
Humboldt strong (leave a stick by the door) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo-os3UqwBY

much much more has happened BUTT I just wanted to get this out there to CTalk homies north of 49.

I put my hockey sticks out
left the lights on at the door
hung our flag and wore my jersey
wish I could've done much more

just a bunch of happy kids
out riding on a bus
with teammates playing hockey
... could be any one of us

Humboldt Strong we ARE, all on the same team
Prayers, strength and healing moving forward

Love Peace and Harmony

folks at PMH have a good reputation
you might also search thru Maia's posts here, as her friend was being treated in that area
here is a quick link for a search of her posts
search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&author_id=77138
Just enter Ontario into the search these results field which brings up 15 posts

OR maybe send her a PM /email ?

she has not been here much lately BUTT her input is missed.

best wishes

Hi Peter,
Although I can't directly answer your question I can tell you that I receive my care through the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre in Newmarket. There is an immunology department, although my treatment was standard chemo, with six to eight oncologists working in the centre. Mine is not an immunology specialist. They also work with Sunnybrook, one of my scans was booked at Sunnybrook and I don't believe my wait time for the test was any longer than if I was a patient at Sunnybrook.

I have nothing but positive comments for the staff and volunteers there and am extremely proud of my local community as it was in large part due to local businesses' (including Magna) and residents' donations that made the centre possible. Watching the video below I could name everyone in it as I have met them all including the doc, who took my case whenever my onc was at conference or on vacation.

SO ... a new release from BCCA regarding using blood tests for breast cancer treatment testing and chemo management.
GREAT ... BUTT as with many things I am hoping that this will also translate into a treatment/ monitoring modality for other cancers in the future
= >> CRC for example

I am NEVER against any of the great work BCCA does for BC ( breast cancer ... not the province of BC ! )
... they ARE a world leader BUTT ....
they also need to expand their expertise to CRC.

just sayin' ....

A drop of blood could fuel a revolution in personalizing cancer treatment

There’s a growing belief that a blood test could act as a crystal ball in predicting a person’s necessity, response, and ultimate outcome to cancer treatment.

According to BC Cancer researchers, blood can contain tiny fragments of DNA from an individual’s cancer and those fragments provide incredible insight into the patient’s journey. Imagine a simple blood test guiding your treatment: pointing to the right drugs, staying one step ahead of the cancer, and effectively breaking it down.

These miniscule fragments are called circulating tumour DNA, or ctDNA for short. And, BC Cancer’s world-leading breast cancer team is embarking on a two year study looking at the benefits of introducing ctDNA testing in the clinic ...
