As a Vermonter, it pains me to say that it makes no sense that pure maple syrup would have a therapeutic effect in fighting cancer. In fact, it seems likely that it would hurt matters, since the sugar in maple syrup would likely lead to an insulin spike and therefore more free insulin growth factor (IGF-1). In addition, the baking soda will have no effect on the pH of cancer cells, since the natural buffering system of the body tightly regulates the acidity of blood. Anti-oxidants are not going to help much either once cancer cells have taken root.
Still, real maple syrup is delightful stuff, and does wonders for the Vermont economy, so please don't use Aunt Jemima.
Best,
Jeremy
