Nov. 19 - World Toilet Day!

Postby beth568 » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:19 pm

Seems like a day all of us should appreciate and acknowledge. 8)

In all seriousness, though, it's an important public health issue. We should all be grateful that we have access to good, clean bathrooms, because lots of people who don't end up very sick or dead. It's something we take for granted, and shouldn't.

It will be my 31st wedding anniversary and, considering how much time I've spent on the "loo" this last year before the resection, the fact this is on a special day for me is ironic!

How apropos that world toilet day would be on my birthday since it was this time last year that Chris started feeling sick and then just after thanksgiving that he landed in the hospital with a blockage and the words you never want to hear...stage 4 cancer. So began our life with "crappy cancer!" Happy "crappy" birthday to me! hee hee.

(actually, lest anyone worry that things aren't going well here, on the contrary life is good and we're enjoying Chris's NED status - but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make fun of the irony.)

No kidding, we are fortunate to have toilets. Ten years ago I was at a public health clinic in Nairobi, Kenya, and was surprised to see, in a very modernized regional capital, that the bathroom facility was a hole in the cement floor of the stall. There was a toilet in the modest apartment where I lived, but none at a public health clinic. Go figure. So let's be grateful for toilets, as well as soft toilet paper instead of newsprint!

Hi Beth, I was going to post something about this yesterday but I got too distracted. I saw something on line about the toilet convention in Singapore. They showcase all the new innovations in toilets. :) Apparently one can spend literally thousands upon thousands on a toilet. I guess they play music and everything! While I would love a toilet with a heated seat and a bidet type function, I know that's not in the cards of course. All we have in our house is one very old bathroom, and while the toilet itself is newer than the bathroom, it's still kind of old. To me, a real upgrade would be to live in a house with more than one bathroom, and with a toilet that would not overflow. In fact, I occasionally have dreams about having to use a toilet, being in a public place, and all the toilets there are either stuffed up, or the stall doors are too short! I'm betting I'm not the only one on this board that has dreams like that. Anyway, happy belated World Toilet Day everyone.

Hooray for western toilets. I went to India a couple of years back and they had squat pans. It was not fun. Happy world toilet day.
