bad taste in mouth after chemo?

Postby christyblum » Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:06 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions to help with the bad taste and feel of your mouth after chemo? I'm having a hard time with it. I'm having a hard time with anything even tasting good. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks Christy

Ain't chemo fun? My dentist told me the bad taste was from my mouth not producing saliva the way I used to. I chewed gum all the time to get me through it. For me only cinnamon sugarless gum worked.

I sip on herbal teas all day long too. I love chamomile and "sleepytime" teas. I can't stand the taste of just plain water anymore - it's awful. And chocolate has completely lost its taste, so it's no longer a temptation.

The only thing which worked for me was "LifeSavers" to remove the taste of something even more evil than chemo ....... hospital cream soups !!!!

Every meal had a "cream" of something and I must have complained so much that when I went for Ileostomy reversal at a related hosptial 6 mo. later, they had "no cream soups" listed in my patient profile on their linked medical records system !!!!

Cheers

How long does it take to go away post chemo? Will I ever like water again? Will chocolate stop tasting like bandaids? Will I be able to chew trident without feeling like my mouth is on fire?

I still had taste but little appetite up to the 11th treatment. After that, no taste no appetite. 4 weeks after the 12th treatment, taste and appetite started to return. Now I'm fine, even toothpaste is OK. Fried food I can't bear the taste of, or the smell of the cooking process.
During chemo, food with a slightly acidic and strong flavour always tasted ok ie water with fresh lemon juice, thai salads.

I think that it is so weird that I can't tolerate the taste of water. What I find works is hot water with fresh lemon. The lemon has the added benefit of liver cleansing according to my acupuncturist.

I also agree about the life savers. I suck on those right after chemo.

It's also hard to believe that I don't like the taste of chocolate. I don't like the taste of hardly anything. Oh, ginger cookies are good right now. Bad nutrition, I know. The ginger helps with the upset stomach, but I confess to having a sweet tooth with this Folfox.

It's like a job, trying to put together something to eat that I will like and doesn't take too much energy. Eating is no longer pleasurable!

This to shall pass, hopefully.

Yucky Taste

Popsicles work!!!

I don't like the "taste" of water either when I'm getting chemo. Although it's not the healthiest, I sometimes binge on lemonaid or gatorade. In addition, I keep my freezer stocked full of popsicles.

I've gotten to the point where I can tolerate water if it is VERY VERY cold. Other than that, I have found I can drink orange juice or a pomegranate/blueberry spritzer. 4 weeks, huh?

Lemon drops and lemon gelato seemed to help me. The tartness was the only thing to overpower that awful metal taste. It does go away after the treatments stop.

I've been using the Kool-Aid packets that you pour right into your water bottle. They've been helping a lot!!! Between chemo and my ileo I need to keep hydrated. Tea is the only other thing I can drink without stomach upset.
