Snow Doesn't Stop Ride To Colon
Sunday, 19 March 2006
Omaha — An anticipated snowstorm held off long enough to let about a dozen riders begin their 34-mile "Rollin' to Colon" fundraising ride Sunday morning in Omaha.
With flakes falling fast and the pavement quickly turning from dark to white, Holly Rochelle (shown at left speaking with police before the event) and her brave band of cyclists set off from Cancer Survivor's Park just after 9 a.m., escorted by a flotilla of Omaha Police cruisers, a pair of support vehicles from Bike Masters and a rescue squad.
Rochelle only received clearance to begin the ride after consulting with Omaha Police, who were in communication with public works crews about the condition of Pacific Street. The planned route included nearly eight miles of riding west on Pacific, then a turn south on 180th to West Center Road enroute to Colon.
