big bums the beast returns

Postby mungo » Wed Aug 10, 2011 3:26 am

No offence intended but I really didn't want to be in the lung thang gang but it seems I am to be a fully paid up member....I had my PET scan (I stuck my finger up to the machine as you recommended Bev and it lifted my spirits no end :) ) which confirmed signs of activity in the lung spot they had been watching for 4 years now.It has been pretty devastating as I really did believe I was on the home straight but then cancer never does play by the rules.I am off to see a cardio thoracic surgeon - by the end of this, i don't think there will be a hospital department that doesn't know my name !!!

So sorry to hear the news. One step and a time as they say so I hope the surgeon says you are a resection candidate.

If they have been watching this for years do they think it is slow growing? Kind of sounds that way which would be good.

Keep us posted - we're thinking about you.

You know my first reaction to any bad news is always denial. Only biopsy can confirm the beast. I vote for some weird inflammation. Are they planning a biopsy? I will be praying for something benign.

Benign is always a possibility, so I'm hoping for that. On the other hand, if this thing has just been hanging out for 4 years and hasn't done a lot, that seems to be a good sign as well. If it is cancer, it must be very slow growing. Did anything else light up? I see in your signature your cancer first up in 2006 - correct? If this is all that has shown up - and its been there for awhile; that is amazing and wonderful!

I say cut the little monster out and live on!

you guys are so great - I will sleep tonight dreaming that it is benign. The thing is is that it has doubled in size to 1.2 cm in the last year so the feeling is is that it should be taken out.I will see what Mr Lung Man says tomorrow.

Sorry to hear your news. I am sitting in the same position. I have two nodules that have not changed in several years. My Onc. informed me I have a lazy cancer. I do hope mine don't double over the next while. If they do I was told I will have sterotactic radiation. I did see my Thor. Surgeon who did vats surgery two years ago on one, but he is of the opinion that if I have these two nodules there probably is more he can't see. Needless to say I would need to see another Tho. Surgeon.

Not the news you wanted, I'm sure, but there's still a lot of hope that this is highly treatable and very slow-growing. There are plenty of weapons in the arsenal for this stuff - now you just have to go get a doc who's willing to use the big guns! :D

Ouch, sorry you have to join the gang mungo. Is it going to be open thoracotomy, or Video Assisted (VATS)? Recovery time is faster for VATS, but even open thoracotomy isn't too bad. Hope for good news

While you are waiting for your surgery occupy your mind - movies, books, crossword puzzles. Exercise physically to the point of exhaustion - believe me the surgery will be the last thing on your mind. You will be sleeping through the surgery and you'll be medicated after for you pain - so there's nothing to worry about.
