Sammie, call your doctor's office today and tell them you need to see the doctor asap because you're "passing blood." That's all they need to hear and they'll make room for you. Odds are your doc will assess your situation and refer you to a specialist. What you're describing could be caused by lots of things, but you need to get it checked out as soon as possible.

Or, go to the Emergency Room, if you prefer. Same result, but probably quicker, depending on your regular doctor's availability.

Good luck--let us know what the doc says.

The fishy smell is probably caused by blood sitting in your digestive tract and becoming partially digested. I know from experience how that smells, and it's not pleasant, but that's probably what's causing the odor.

It is not normal to have blood in your stool, and it is not normal to have mucous in your stool. I never knew about the mucous not being normal - I had it for years. This doesn't mean cancer - it can be digestive diseases, or an infection, or other issues. You do need to see a doctor and find out the cause. Please let us know what you find out after seeing the doctor.

I had almost forgot about this....I had lots of incidents of "jelly mucus type stuff" ....as far back as my teenage years.
I never mentioned it to anyone.

When my daughter was 7 months old (now 22 yrs) she had an intussuception, and the on call doctor asked me if her poo looked like currant jelly - I remember screaming I had no idea because I had never had currant jelly. Currant jelly is what you are describing. Her intestines were telescoping into themselves. She had emergency surgery and had abdominal problems for years. At age 19 she had a colonoscopy and a pre-cancerous polyp was removed. 2 months later she had severe abdominal pain and 2/3 of her intestines were being choked out by scar tissue. Then 6 months later I was diagnosed with Stage 3 CRC.
Never ignore blood and mucus in your poop.

Yes, you need to call the doctor. Don't tell them you had a little blood when you went to the bathroom, as a clinic nurse (myself) and your age they'll just assume it's hemmorhoids. Tell them you've been having (you don't have to say one day) abdominal pains and mucous tinged with blood in your blood movements. I'm not trying to scare you because this could just be a hemorrhoid but it does need to be checked out and taken seriously. The people on the telephone may not take you seriously. Guess what, they're not the doctor. Make an actual appointment and talk to the doctor.

Try and not worry, it could be something very simple. It's just better to be safe than sorry.

I second Terry's very good advice--don't downplay what you've seen when talking to the medical personnel. I told a nurse that I had seen blood in my stool and she told me it was probably 'just a hemorhoid", so I didn't worry about it, and I should have! Do not let them brush you off due to your age, and don't back down if you have the feeling that something is really wrong. Don't delay, why sit home and worry about it daily? Call your doctor and get it checked out, it's the sensible thing to do. If it's nothing, you can be relieved. If it's not nothing, you can get started on fixing it.

Best of luck to you.
