ok...so I have just spent an AMAZING weekend of my life with some of the most beautiful people inside and out. No matter what happens in the future, my special memories of this weekend will not be tainted. The whole point of the Colondar is to raise awareness that anyone can get CRC and have other younger survivors meet each other. Do you realize how isolated we all have felt? Then we finally get to be around a whole group of peers that have no judgment against you for having ‘butt cancer’. It’s a great feeling of acceptance and understanding and that can never be taken away. This is what it is all about. Each model was so special/unique in their own way and there is something that I love about each and every one of them. From what I have seen the pictures are so poetically beautiful. I was proud to be a model and crew for this year.

No matter what happens there are going to be sick-o’s out there. And why are you looking at that stuff anyway? What do you think public release is? Hello! No one has control over what anything will be used on once it’s in someone else’s hands. There are a bunch of sick-o’s on the internet. Anyone has to be careful with anything that is posted on the Internet. It’s called common sense. I just know the reason behind the Colondar is to raise awareness for Colon Cancer. This is the point clear and simple. The good that the Colondar is trying to do far outweighs any nut cases out there. Stop looking at the negative and finding the positive to promote such an important issue.

Sickos and insurance issues are the last thing on my mind. Heck, I've not been able to get life insurance for the past few years anyway.

The past four days were in a word, priceless.

If the Colandar results in one person being diagnosed at an early stage, it's worth what ever little risk we've taken.

REALITY CHECK

Postby tc14420 » Mon Jun 11, 2007 12:13 pm

First let me say I came across this web site because I have a friend who had colon cancer and modeled for the colondar as I listened to their story about the shoot (This is only my opinion and I am entitiled to it ) It sounded like a Jerry Lewis Telathon wheel the crippled kids on stage so the whole world can see and donate money...............A shark feed frenzy.
the sponsers get you to this in a wonderful setting and convince you that you can save the world, put you together with other cancer victoms and make you feel special.... the reality of it is any young person looking at those pictures of scars certinally is not going to run out for a colonoscopy. The only people that benefit are the sponsers who make all the money on the sale of the colondars and then of course the few models who put their face on the internet links and ask for money.
I think it is the most degrading fund raising fuction and you'd get more publicity and raise more awareness gioing on the JERRY SPRINGER SHOW.
But I know none of the people on this web site will see it that way. Good Luck.

All I can say is you're so totally wrong.

Well, I could say more.... but it wouldn't be nice.

Oh, Ray always the gentleman…yes this person who supposedly knows someone knows nothing of the truth. We were there. We know the truth. We don’t believe you because what you are saying is so far from reality. Especially when 3 of this years models are already on your case. Need I say more? I can…but the truth is stronger than any lie you try to spread. It’s not flyin’ buddy…

Yes it is your opinion and you are entitled to it, but as a 36 year old who can feel isolated because of this disease (most of the people that are being treated in the cancer center where I am are over 70), When you see others wiht the same scar, same issues you begin to feel alittle more normal - which right now in my world is HUGE. And you know I will reread the stories because it INSPIRES me that there are other stage IV's out there who are surviving. It makes me realize that I am not the only mom out there battling this.

***disclaimer. I don't necessarily want to egg any of this on. so i'll post my feelings on tc14420's mssg. and then post a seperate response on a more positive note on my experiences. b/c i'd rather this thread focus more on the topic at hand which is the awesomeness that was the Colondar 2008 shoot!***

you certainly are entitled to your opinion. and thank you for
clarifying that it is in fact YOUR OPINION.
and you're right, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on this site who
would agree with you. and you know why?
Because we come here seeking things just like this. stories for us to
relate to. b/c we are directly affected by this every day of our lives.
either b/c we suffer the affects personally, or a very close loved one
does.

no offense, b/c obviously i don't know you from jack and so if i speak
out of line, pardon me. BUT that being said, do you have any form of
cancer? life-threatening illness? debilitating or profoundly life
changing handicap or condition?
If not, then if i were you, i would politely and respecfully NOT insult
those of us here who CHOSE...i emphasize, CHOSE to take part in this.
B/c by insinuating things like " sponsors get you to this in a wonderful
setting and convince you that you can save the world, put you together
with other cancer victoms and make you feel special" is more degrading
of you to state like that then it actually is.
first off, no sponsor swept us off to a wonderful location. it was
someone's home allowing us to take up camp. it was neighbors donating
their space for a good cause. it was hardwork by everyone involved at
the sacrifice of many aspects of their personal and professional lives.
and put us together with other victims?!?! Excuse me, i never a day in
my life would refer to me, nor any one there as a victim of anything
save for maybe bad taste in humor on occasion ( )
I am NOT a victim of cancer. Cancer did not rape me, or steal my car.
As far as I can tell I'm not letting cancer stop me from doing
anything.

I can't speak for your friend. But i CAN speak for everyone at this
years shoot. And i am willing to put large quantities of money on the fact
that not one of us felt exploited, or put on parade, or victimized.
There was no pulling the wool over anyones eyes (or legs, arms, belly,
breasts or butts for that matter)

Please only speak to things that you know or have personally
experienced. And if you're truly appalled by what the colondar is
trying to achieve maybe instead of criticizing you can suggest better,
more effective or positive options? Or do something yourself.

So easy to judge. So much harder to dedicate yourself to attempting to
make a difference as people like Molly and Hannah are doing every day. They don't need to even speak to that, their actions say everything.

(oh, and i personally have already experienced several young people
getting tested, or just even beginning to talk with a doctor about
symptoms they were too embarrassed about after talking with me and seeing what I've been through. not to say you're assumption that no young person would look at our pictures and decide to get tested ISN'T a possibility, i don't think you can state either argument with total conviction. What I do know is that if someone is already experiencing questionable symptoms, then yes, our pictures and stories will probably very much encourage them to finally get tested.)

whew...sorry guys...just needed to get that out. And yes, i can go on and on and on. but i think i've said enough.

One of the best experiences of this whole disease process is the weekend I spent with some of the most fabulous people who have been through as much if not so much more than me with this terrible Disease. It is unfortunate that people with sour grapes, or whatever you are venting end up on a message board that promotes support and healing for those of us with this disease.

It is so great to see so many people utilize an amazing message board, that creates encouragement for others battling this disease.

All I can say is wait until you see this Colondar. Your grapes may get a little more sour. Hope you find some happiness along your road. I sure found a lot this week end, minus all the so called corporate sponsors you talk so fondly of.

Hey, Ralph...Porn lovers get colon cancer too.

Seriously though, most people that use Google understand that we don't link to ANY sites (other than on our sponsor page) from the Colondar. We also have no control over who links to us...but we must be doing something right because there seem to be a lot of them.

By the way, please don't link to porn from our site.

To our "Guest" and tc14420:

In reality, the Colondar isn't linked to a single porn site (Molly has already addressed this) and has literally never even broken even on costs - much less made money for anyone. It would be great if that happened because that would mean that we could use that money to fund new awareness-raising projects, but so far no dice. Our sponsors don't make money either - they actually pay money to us, and we would not have the Colondar without them and their money.

Because we are a 501c3 organization, all of our financial records are available to the public. All the info is there, including how much we spend on projects like the Colondar and the Colossal Colon, how much Molly and I have gotten paid over the years, and how much we receive via Colossal Colon rentals, Colondar sponsorships, direct donations, etc. We have records available from 2004 (the first year we had them!) right up until the last quarter's bank statements.

In case you don't have time fly to New York or Arkansas and pore through our records, our summary balance sheet for the Colondar is below. This is rough and is put together from our 2006 and 2007 bank records, but doesn't include the 2005 records because they aren't automated in QuickBooks and right this minute I am too tired from the photo shoot to figure it all up - so it's rough but it gives the correct picture that we operate at a fairly large loss to produce and distribute the Colondar.

Money received in 2006 & 2007 (sponsorship and direct sales): $56, 985.00
Money spent in 2006 & 2007 (including a per cent of salaries/employer taxes/benefits for employee time spent on Colondar): $90,271.89

This year so far we have a little over a $17,000 loss including time spent (salaries/taxes/benefits of about $6,000). Like the numbers above, that number can be a bit misleading because of course we have recieved some money from sales of the 2007 Colondar but have spent money on the 2008 that isn't finished yet. So the loss will increase when we pay our credit card bill for the actual 2008 shoot (about $20,000) and the printing (also about $20,000) but then of course we will recoup some of that as we continue to sell 2007 Colondars and when we start to sell 2008 Colondars this fall. If we don't get a few more sponsors before we go to print, we estimate that we will be at a loss of around $10,000-$15,000 for the 2008 Colondar.

Hey - luckily the Colondar isn't about the money! For that matter, neither are the other things we do!

The loss on the Colondar is in spite of our truly generous and supportive sponsors, who do this because they love the Colondar and honestly believe in its message - they literally do not make one penny off of the Colondar. And just so everyone knows, we don't do any of that fancy Enron accounting - this is the "real" loss, ie cash money that is going out of our account that is not coming back in. If this explanation isn't good enough for anyone, come and check out our records - the books are literally open at any time and for anyone, and I can be available to explain and answer any questions about our finances if you let me know in advance.

I am not aware of any past or current models "who put their face on the internet links and ask for money". I can't guarantee that it hasn't happened but Molly and I are not aware of it, and if you see something you are are concerned about all you have to do is let us know. Much like the situation with Google and other search engines, we don't have control over what people do, but it would at least be nice to be told - doesn't mean we'll agree with you that it's a problem, but it would be nice to have a chance to look at it before you rail on us about something we have nothing to do with. In addition to all of that, if any past or current model felt that they were being farmed out to raise money for our sponsors, it's too bad that your friend didn't look for the facts or talk with us - because while I can't and won't dispute someone's feelings, what you wrote about The Colon Club and the Colondar sponsors is just flat out not true, period.

I hope this email has cleared up any misunderstanding about our financial situation and the Colondar. If not just let me know and I'll be happy to explain further.

Bravo bravo.

I was gonna mention the fact that a nonprofit's finances are pretty much open record, but figured that's more of your guys area to address than mine.

boy, it's a good thing i don't have a real asscrack that allows me to get my panties in such a bunch over something as positive as a calendar. some folk....

aaaaaaannnyway, on a more positive note, Karen, I love love love LOVE your parents. seriously. love them. your dad is a HOOT! and your mom is adorable. lucky to have such rockin' ass parents.
(ask em about me, i was talkin trash bout chicago with em.)

as per my personal experiences from the weekend, It was truly a lifechanging experience. I cannot speak enough to the fact of how much i changed. and just when i thought i couldnt' change anymore.

i can't say that i was really 'in' a shell to begin with (i'm sure most of you may be able to guess from my posts, i'm not too much of a shy person) but if it's possible, i was able to come even more out of my shell.
i've never been one to hide my scars or stories. so that wasn't necessarily new for me, but what was new, was that it wasn't just me sharing my scars and war stories.
it wasn't me explaining how it feels to have cancer at a young age and be profoundly and permanently changed by it.
it wasn't me trying to educate people about what it means to have undergone these things.
it wasn't people trying to figure out how to help me or do things for me b/c they feel bad for me.
it was me being me. finally being me again. after all these many many months of being a cancer patient, i suddenly just became Becca again.
Indeed, i was becca with a brand new set of plumbing, but i was Becca.

I was able to change my status as "The 26 year old girl diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer, Rebecca" to "Becca, who also happened to have beaten cancer"

if that makes any sense.

because everyone around me knew what it is about, and lived it. the weekend became not about having cancer as much as it was about life itself.

aight. now i'm startin' to cheese myself out. but i'm just sayin', y'know..

twas a bangin' good time. i'd do it again in less than a blink of an eye
