Has anyone looked into this clinical trial ?

Postby EBMJ » Thu Sep 16, 2010 3:13 pm

Sloan Kettering is doing a clinical trial for KRAS mutants like myself. It is a combination of Erbitux and Imprime PGG. From what I can gather it is not chemo therapy, it works to stmulate your own immune system. If I find out the FOLFIRI is not working for me I am definately going to check this out. I am just looking for some first hand experience.

Hi Jim -

Do you have a link for the trial? I am also a "mutant" - when they determined that KRAS mutants don't benefit from Erbitux/Vectibix, my oncologist said the hot research area involved what could be done to enable these drugs to work in KRAS mutants.

So, as a mutant, I like to keep up with this research.

Wow that would be interesting to see if it works. It would give the poor old mutants another option to try..... Options are good.

Google pulled up some interesting stuff - very good news:

http://www.evaluatepharma.com/Universal/View.aspx?type=Story&id=196279

The company is nearing completion of a dual-arm Phase Ib/IIa clinical trial in colorectal cancer patients. In arm one, the combination of Imprime PGG, Erbitux® (Cetuximab) and Camptosar® (Irinotecan) nearly doubled the overall response rate of second- and third-line metastatic colorectal cancer patients compared with the standard of care. The fully enrolled second arm, which is evaluating the combination of Imprime PGG and Erbitux alone without chemotherapy, has shown similarly positive results.

I thought this trial was not enrolling anymore. All my wonderful surgeons are at Sloan and I had two appointments with the oncologist conducting this trial. I found him to be the coldest, most uncaring doctor ever.
If you are considering a trial I would like to mention the one I have enrolled in. It is using macrobeads containing mouse kidney cancer cells. Conducted at the Rogosin Institute at Weill Cornell, just across the street from Sloan. It is a very unique trial in that there is no chemo or drugs of any kind involved. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you want a break/change from chemo and don't mind doing something very unusual. Searching trials is a very daunting task and I wish you the best in your search.

Thanks Jim for the post. It is nice to think that there is something out there that might possibly work other than the two big guns my dad has been/is on.

I would like to think that Erbitux helped me. I was ending chemo when the KRASS was discovered, so my tumor was never tested. But God forbid it comes back again then they can take a tiny slice of my preserved tumor (in NY....almost funny for me to picture this....as we moved from NJ 5 yrs. ago and I miss NYC.......but a piece of me is still there...hehe) and then they can test it for KRASS. I had many side effects on the Erbitux & it is believed by my onc. that it could have made my neuropathy & mouth sores worse. So I hope I do not have the KRASS mutation. I was recently told it is rare to have that. So sorry that is the case for many of you here.

Hang in there......they will find a cure for cancer!
