tumeric against colorectal cancer link

Postby pabl » Sat Jun 26, 2010 2:11 pm

My oncology dietition said no to tumeric during chemo, but after treatment, I intend to use it. Here is a link to Dr. Andrew Weil's sight about tumeric studies: http://www.drweil.com/drw/ecs/forums/th ... &catid=582

Pam: good luck with the tumeric. I tried it but it made me really sick to my stomach. This was a very strange reaction because I love curry and have no problems with eating it. It just seems to be the pill/capsule form that does the number on my digestive system.

Give it a go.....hope it works for you :D .

I was taking curcumin in pill form 500 mg before I started chemo Flofox6. It was causing me to bleed for 3 days during treatment. I went off it and bleeding stopped. So I will wait till I am done and start it up again.

My wife has been cooking with every known anti-cancer spice known to man, or at least to her. The food has been very good. I have tried a few things in pill form and I guess I am not too much of a pill kind of guy, but food, well most of the time, is something else.

My naturopath has me take it. I hate pills too - would much rather cook with it (which he also encourages). But as I don't cook with this seasoning every day, I suppose I can swallow one more horse pill. :-)

The most tolerable curcumin supplement we have found has been New Chapter Organic's Turmeric Force. Curamed by Terry Naturally/EuroPharma, which is what many of the studies use, did give my husband GI issues (mostly upset stomach).

Sloan Ketterling has a study on it. I'm sorry I don't remember how I found it exactly, I think I googled tumeric + cancer study or something. Anyway, they have found it makes some chemos uneffective. I believe Irinotecan is one (folfori) and a breast cancer chemo but if the study hasn't been done with the other chemos I wouldn't want to chance it. If I ever get off chemo I would consider taking it because the study was pretty promising with tumeric itself. It did say that GI problems was a side effect for some.

I wish I had known this! I was taking a supplament w/ turmeric the whole time through Folfiri txs. I had slight progression and was taken off of Folfiri. My Onc was surprised that I failed Folfiri so quickly(12 txs), this would explain why. This is why its very important to tell your Onc about ALL of your supplements! Although it was really helping with my joint/pain and achiness. I had to stop taking it for my clinical trial.

jmarie, sorry you did not know during chemo.

ALL, Please follow the Onc's directions when under his treatment.

I follow the Anti-Cancer Diet, and began such after Chemo was concluded and I always tell the MD what supplements and vitamins I take.

Tumeric can taste good. I put it onto my pizzas along with Garlic and other spices. Remember, the tumeric does not work unless you take it with equal parts of Black Pepper.

jmarie, that really stinks. I didn't know about it either until I think it was John that told me. I did a search on it when I thought I was going to get a chemo break and that's where I found a study done by Sloan. I don't think most oncologist know much about supplements so I think it's pretty safe to say that you shouldn't take anything during chemo unless it's something like calcium, D3 or that your onc. DOES know about. I also heard from someone quite a while ago on here about green tea and blood clotting. I asked my onc. and he said drinking a cup once in a while wouldn't hurt. Again, thanks to to, to long on chemo my brain doesn't remember if it caused clots or caused bleeding.
