"Meissner was diagnosed with Stage 1 colon cancer. Stage 1 ranks second among the cancer’s six stages. The last, Stage 5, is when the cancer has spread from the colon to other parts of the body".

I thought there were only four stages of colon cancer and if the article is right and there are six stages, how is stage 5 the last? Is there a new staging system?

The paper just got its facts mixed up. There are a couple of staging schemes, but I think most people use AJCC/TNM staging now. There are 8 stages if you include the sub stages IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IIIC. Each substage has a different 5 year survival rate so I would consider them distinct. Here's more info from the american cancer society:

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/conte ... staged.asp
42 - dx Jan 3 2007 stage IIA colon
9 FOLFOX4, 3 5-FU completed Sep 24 2007
Blockage symptoms, Negative Colonoscopy, Positive PET Oct 2009
2nd Resection Oct 2009 - Suspected Local Recurrence was Negative
