Taking advantage of the "juice"?

Postby SkiFletch » Mon Feb 08, 2010 3:31 pm

Hey folks, now that I'm back to working out while on treatment I just realized that I'm getting steriods (decadron) with every infusion, so why not maximize the workout benefit? :). I realize decadron is not an anabolic steriod, but it still has to have some benefit in aiding the healing process from working out. So the question becomes, if I get treatment Wednesday, when would I get the most benefit from working out? The evening before (tuesday), the early morning of treatment day, or should I bring the "murse" to the gym with me after treatment on wednesday? My little knowledge of juicing and steroids leans me towards using the juice to heal from the workout, but I might be wrong there? Any thoughts?

And yes, I am crazy, but might as well get some benefit out of all the stuff we get put through :D

It cranked me up pretty good after the first couple of infusions, but I also felt kind of dizzy and unsure of my physical state, so I resisted the temptation to hop on the bike in the days immediately following my dose. It did help me get some work done a the office, however, as well as some work-related travel. My "benefit" got weaker with each infusion, but Gaelen had the opposite reaction, so hopefully you're more like her in that respect.

I had an uncontrollable urge to stop at the batting cage after treatments.

Hehe, I almost posted a similar thread last week and then I thought everyone would think I was a druggee or something. Two weeks ago after infusion #9 I went and lifted dumbbells and was blown away by how well I did. I managed to move up to the next level in a shoulder press that was defeating me before. Now I'm able to do 5 sets of 6 reps * 40lbs dumbbells on the shoulders. Also increased from 45 to 50 lbs dumbbells on several other exercises.

I say let's enjoy it ;-)

On my 3rd or 4th treatment, I was really hyped and I did an hour long boot-camp type workout, and accidentally pulled the needle out of my port-a-cath with the little pump still going. oops. Fortunately, a band-aid for skin, and then I pushed the off button on the pump, and made a quick trip back to the cancer center to get hooked up again and I was good to go.

I lost the steroid boost after about the sixth or seventh treatment, I'd come home and just want to plop on my couch, it was all I could do to take my dog for a walk. But that was better than nothing.

So you guys are thinking more to take the murse to the gym on infusion day instead of killing myself the day before and using them to heal?

I exercised throughout my Folfox treatments and the worst two reactions I had were when I worked out hard the day before. I decided it was a bad idea to break down tissues & then give them chemo & expect them to heal well.

Ultimately, I came to treat each infusion day as "race day," i.e. I arrived in the best condition I could (hydrated, rested, etc.) as I would for a real race. This worked much better for me. Good luck getting through this.
