I made the decision: do the CT scan

Postby CaliforniaBagMan » Thu Feb 04, 2010 11:21 am

I posted earlier that two docs favored yet another CT scan to monitor a possible recurrence which was observed on CT but negative on a biopsy, but one doctor felt it unwarranted and advised to avoid the additional radiation exposure. I was in the middle of that decision wishbone and had to decide.

I had the CT yesterday, and am now awaiting results. I'm confident the mass discovered earlier will be confirmed just to be necrosis, and not cancer. But, as a veteran of these scans, the thing I know I don't want to see in the results is: "... but we have a new finding, not present on the last CT ...." So, I wait.
CT guided biopsy on mass - still NED !!!
CT scan finds new 2x3cm mass on 10/09
APR surgery 11/07; NED thereafter
Folfox/radiation 9/07-10/07
DX Stage III rectal cancer 7/07

Thanks again for the advice from so many here to do the CT scan even though some of my docs advised it wasn't needed.

I got the results today from last week's CT scan-- the new mass discovered in October has not changed in size at all. Along with the inconclusive PET and negative biopsy, they are now confident in saying that the mass is tissue damaged from radiation treatments (necrosis) and not a cancer recurrence. This apparently is quite common with breast cancer but somewhat rare for rectal cancer. Anyway, I'll take it!!

congrats on the great news. i love great news! so interesting however that a coworkers mother just went through this exact same thing, her mass was the exact same size, and was also biopsied as NED and ct scan came back clean. hers was also assumed to be radiation damage.
