Feb 2010 weight loss/exercise thread

Postby SkiFletch » Tue Feb 02, 2010 9:52 pm

Hope nobody minds if I start this month's thread :)

Surgeon finally let me back in the gym yesterday so I took it nice and easy. I've turned into a complete weekling since all this business started and it's like going to the gym for the first time again. But DAMN did it feel good to be back. Today I actually pushed myself, holy endorphins batman :D. I feel better than I have since September, this is fantastic. Did some lifting for about 45 mins today, 3 sets to exhaustion, minimum 10 reps, one exercise per major upper muscle area (chest, back, shoulders, biceps, triceps) then did some weighted squats, lunges, step ups, and a little crabwalk for the legs and polished it all off with 30 mins on the stair climber. I'm physically whooped, but I still feel great. Even just bieng there on the stair climber in the cardio room with the rest of the world made me feel truly normal for the first time in a while. I was climbing up those stairs with a gigantic shit-eating grin on my face, enjoying my time there. 80 stories, a nice cooldown streatch, and a shower later and I was out of there. Wow was that fantastic!. Next up, skiing on Thursday :D

Still sticking to my low carb regimen...well as much as possible. I've been eating more veggies than usual and some days my bowels just don't like that. :( I'm forever trying to find that magical balance between being constipated (no good) and having to go like 20 times a day (again, no good). I started my 2nd week back at the gym and I'm pleased that I'm not overly sore. I am hoping to increase the weight (the machines', not mine!) in another week or so. I am also continuing to walk on those days that I don't go to the gym. Even on those days when it hits 30 below with the windchill...yikes.

Oh, and Fletch...you will be happy to hear that I am currently making plans to go hiking in the Whites in May. Last year when I was on Xeloda I did some 'baby' mountains, but this year I hope to get back to something a bit more challenging. Hopefully my battered body will cooperate.

been watching this thread for a while and just noticed it was
weight loss/exercise thread !!

Weight loss not an issue right now...but exercise...Oh Yeah !

SO now that I have read and understand the thread

Today (like most days for me) walked my grand"puppy" of 130 lbs. for 45 min. @ 3-4 mph. and did 20 min. on the treadmill @ 4.5 mph jog...5% incline....gotta work up those metabolic equivalents !

[[[ got so hungry I went out to grill some chicken, and seafood pasta...and... OH never mind. I'll be back tomorrow !]]]

Cheers

Wish I could say it was the BC bud (...this bud's for me !) BUT not the case. Maybe lack of oxygen from too much exercise...I'll have to pace myself.

Actually went out for a ski yesterday after a couple frustrating weeks when it was too ugly to bike and not enough snow to ski. Now we have just barely enough. I had a great run; more today over lunch hour.

I must admit I haven't been taking good care of myself since I had my son 3 years ago. Eating right and exercising was something I thought I didn't have time for but now I realise that I have to get fit and healthy. I have started Weight watchers and exercising at home after my children are asleep and already I am finding I have more energy and I'm sleeping better. I had a long talk to my husband about how worried I have been about my HNPCC diagnosis and needed his support to eat healthier and exercise more often and he is supporting me. I will check in and update you all with my progress, this will be another incentive to keep going!

If you're looking for a little more inspiration, Gailie, you can search out the monthly exercise threads. Somebody always starts a new one at the beginning of the month. There are some pretty cool reports in previous exercise threads.

It’s been one of those crazy weeks- not cancer stuff- just regular life/work

I went to the gym Monday afternoon as I was off from work, went Tuesday morning before work. Walk both ways did my cardio/strength and felt pretty good.
Was supposed to go this morning but I think me dog turned the clock off as I am sure it wasn’t me. Well now I feel kind of bad about being lazy and have to go tomorrow even if there is a lot of snow in New york

Weight loss zero- paul lost 6 pounds since Christmas I don’t understand it

did my two gym visits....am steadily adding weight to my regimen... :D ...so hopefully soon I will be lifting as much as I was pre dx. I continue to walk on the non gym days. Low carbing...still. Starting week three. Since the bathroom scale is evil  I have no idea how much I weigh..wether I've lost or not. I go by my clothes. Still tight. Dang.

I was having a problem cutting out junk food and someone gave me some good advice. Instead of focusing on cutting out bad food, put your focus on adding the good food. So I haven't completely eliminated soda but since I am focusing on drinking 4-5 cups of tea a day, It has been hard to fit those and a soda in to the day. So I did that for this last week and just realized I "forgot" to have a soda today. So Focusing on the good has helped push out the bad. This week I am focusing on continuing the tea and adding 3 servings of fruit. Hoping to cut out the chips and icecream. The wierd thing is before chemo I never drank sodas, rarely ate fast food. Now I crave them, WTF! I don't get it. The only good thing from Folfox was drinking anything carbonated felt like my mouth was exploding, so I never even thought about drinking soda. Now I am on FOlfiri soda tastes so good, its rediculas. If it wasn't constantly in the house I wouldn't hardly drink it, but my husband insists on buying coke for his rum and cokes.

For now the walking has been touch and go. For the most part I walk for an hour at the mall 3 times a week. That is no stopping, no shopping just walking. The weather is just kind of iffy to be walking with the baby. We go to Gymboree for her "Gym" class and then I get a cup of tea from Teavana and we walk. Than afterwards I will go browse through some stores. Saturday is her class day and than tues and thurs are open gym hours. The mall is usually too busy to feel like I get a good heart rate going so I usually walk for 90-120 min to make up for walking slower. Tues and thur I can usually maintain 3-4mph.

It's a cold day--low 20s with a stiff wind, but sunny (unlike points south where they're enduring Snowmageddon today). Since there's barely enough snow to ski on, I decided to try my usual 23-mile bike loop around the neighborhood. It wasn't bad. I added an extra layer and the only parts that got cold were my toes. It was invigorating. When the going gets tough (legs/knees hurt or I'm winded), I always remind myself that exercise is a huge factor in preventing a recurrence. That's usually all the motivation I need to smile and grit it out.

Heh, yeah it's nice sitting here in Buffalo and watching other people get dumped on for once. We get so much, I'm allowed to smile ;). Back to the gym today for some more lifting and being humbled by my weakness. Did see a little improvement in a few exercises being able to get a few more reps per set in, so that was nice. The one good part about bieng so weak is that improvement happens fast :D

Tomorrow is going to be a mostly stair climber day. Gonna see if I can break the 1000ft/100 stories mark. Great way to start my mountain climbing training, gotta be ready for summer shenanegans 8)
