Hi Aniqah

Yes, I am from South Africa. From Centurion, near Pretoria. My husband is the one with the cancer history. He was dx in 2003 with rectum cancer and still going on. He had his chemo and liver resection also, in 2006, and he had chemo again last year Aug 2008 to March 2009. He was then stable with three small marks still on his lungs, and he has to go to the Oncologist again for his scans and test in January.
He is going to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Pretoria. Dr Graham Cohen is his oncologist. We are quite happy with his treatment there. In October 2009 now he was 6 years past initial diagnosis.

Where are you people? Were is you boyfriend going for his treatment?

Regards
Ilse

Hello Ilse

We're in Cape Town. Camerons colon resection was done at Constantiaberg and he also goes to Dr Garth Davids at their Oncology Unit for Chemo. Both liver resections were done at UCT Private Academic by Prof Krige (he is my favourite person when it comes to doctors we've dealt with because he is SO positive and upbeat). I cant remember what the doctor who performed the colon resection was called, those few weeks are a bit of a blur.

We've mostly been very happy with his treatment - Constantiaberg is def the better option though as the nursing staff is 100 times better then what we experienced at UCTPAH. We all agreed that Professor Krige is brilliant, but the nursing staff in that hosp let him down in a big way. I shouldnt shine all of them in such a negative light, there were a few that were compassionate and new exactly what they were doing, but there were a lot more that just didnt seem to care/were just going through the motions of doing their job. I guess one could argue that if we hadn't experienced Constantiaberg first we wouldn't have anything to compare it to and maybe our opinion would be a bit different.

Wow, your hubbie was diagnosed in 03, he's been fighting this horrible disease for a very long time - he must be a very strong man. Actually, i'm sure you're very strong too. I hope that you get some good results come Jan! Cam should be having a PET scan next week, he's waiting for them to call and remind him of the appointment.

I need to run, will be back tomorrow.

Ciao

Hi Paul, we are also from South Africa. Little Company of Mary, Mary Potter Oncology Centre. We stay in Centurion though. And I work at Unisa. My hubby is the patient, and I am the caregiver. Our surgeon is at Kloof Hospital, the best around. He is also a gasteroenterologist and specialises on the liver and RFA.

Hope you are still well! Pete is not doing so good at the moment after 8,5 years.
Regards

Hi Ilse,

I saw some of your earlier posts. I'm sorry that it is not going so well with Peter. I am only starting my cancer journey. I live in Garsfontein have been using Pretoriam East Hospital so far. My surgeon is Dr Michael Heyns and my oncologist is Dr Fourie.

You don't know where one can have HIPEC surgery done do you? I may need it at some stage.

stay in touch,
sterkte,
Paul

Hi Paul, the only person I can think of is the surgeon we use at Kloof who specializes on the liver. Peter had 2 liver ops and a laparotomy with him already (and a hernia repair and a stoma redo), and I have seen him, and heard his patients family when in the ICU. Other patients leave their surgeons to go to this guy. Dr Charl van Niekerk.

You can't go wrong! All the best, I think he will be up to date, he was one of the first 3 surgeons in SA doing RFA.

Paul, we know about this! But people tend to make one case that turned out wrong always the dr's fault. I recommended about 5 people to this specific dr, and some told me how he talked hard and straight to them about he can't help then, if they don't also follow instructions. We always followed instructions, and we never had problems. Since 2006 we know him, and he is our lifesaver. A very special person, Christian, workaholic, and dedicated to his patients. He even once when Peter came out of theatre 11 pm at night, sat next to Peter's bed and pray. He sit and listen to every thing you say, it is not that he wants you out of his room to fit in the next patient, although they sit their. I saw in ICU how many patients he had, how people change to be his patient, how Discovery didn't pay for the operation on another woman, and he did it for free, to help her, because he saw what was happening to her. Two of the people I recommended to him told me how they didn't follow instructions, and how strict he was with them. I think my husband was one of his model patients, and that is why two hemicolectomies with galbladder removal and RFA, port removal, bowel obstruction, stoma redo, hernia repair, everything just went well.

It is your choice though.
We also stay 3 km from Unitas, and I prefer Kloof much better. LCM is still the best.

Regards, and best from us
Ilse and Peter

Hi Ilse I'm sure that Dr van Niekerk is a fine doctor. Maybe I should not have mentioned that case. I didn"t mean anything by it. It"s a pity for him that that is the first thing that people see when they look him up. Cheers, Paul
