Re: Chemo/rad comfort items

I'll throw a couple extra in. Get some comfy sweat pants w/o any metal. I keep mine on for scans and for radiation, they just had to see the tatoos. I also had some warm slippers with a rubber sole, no metal. I wore them walking around everywhere. never had to worry about my feet on a cold floor. My...

My Cancer Mixtape - Avett Edition

Music is one of the most important parts of my life. I don't get paid for it or even praised for it, but it is, without a doubt, one of my favorite parts of the human experience. Earlier, there was a thread of cancer sayings, and it reminded me of some posts I wrote to facebook about some Avett Bros...

Re: Trouble getting the truth doctors

Oh, I don't blame them for the effects at all. I'm still kicking so I rate it all as worth it and can't regret any of it, even if later it turns out it wasn't necessary. I don't even mind that much about not being told before. I've had and seen so much wacky stuff from treatments, there is no way th...

Re: Trouble getting the truth doctors

I had the same thing. I never got a Dr. to even look at it. Finally, I was just trying to show them and they would turn away like I was flashing them. I had been describing it and they really didn't get the severity of it. When the oozing would scab into fabric that was the worst. Scrunching the end...

Re: i'm newly diagnosed....... HELP !

Lots of good stuff about mindsets. I've been lucky enough to be here long enough to know that worrying about a prognosis doesn't seem to have that great an impact. I did want to give one bit of practical information. I am crazy about anything compromising skin. Needles are still a mess for me, but I...

Re: Sinister Project in mind/Dark Humour wanted

I lost a ton of weight during treatment. Went from over 200 to under 150. I'm back around 175. My wife and I were at a dinner party and a woman who we first met in the depths of treatment. First, she was surprised that my wife had a new chunky man. It seems she was quite smitten by her previous beau...

Re: How to less going to toilet?

With the urination, that is likely due to radiation. I don't have any good recommendations as I've travelled the country meeting with urologists, and while they all have something to say, the gist is always there is nothing they can do right now. However, there is a lot of work on growing new bladde...

Re: Cancer in the movies

For me, "Breaking Bad" had a pretty good grip on the cancer experience. 50/50 was pretty good for realistic portrayal. I particulaly liked how tied JGL's character was to time while on treatment. "I can go out tonight, but I need to be home by 10:15" sort of stuff. A lot of times...

Re: About to file for SSDI, coming to terms with what is ahe

It is also possible to back date your eligibility. They can look at your record and might determine you were disabled after your first surgery. In that case, your medicaid might kick in quite soon. You will also get a lump sum payment for the owed SSDI. At least, that was what happened with me.

Re: New/Scared caregiver

It is such a paradox. The robustness and fragility of the human body. That paradox ripples through so much of the human experience. I can't say I've been surprised at the strength and energy my wife has brought to every aspect of the disease. I have always known she was exceptional. But that doesn't...

Re: Bit of advice please

Waiting to get through all of the diagnostic procedures when you are in a physical crisis can be maddening. I can't think of anything in particular outside of medications. I would make sure to keep drinking, maybe add some gatorade kind of stuff if you can stomach the sugar. I might try some soaking...

Re: Public toilet rant

I'm all over this rant. I get particularly agitated by men who refuse to use the open urinals. My 6 year old, who recognizes the great benefit men enjoy by being able to use a urinal, often questions,"Why is that man using the sit down potty to stand up when there are unused urinals?" I us...

Re: Get a Second Opinion?

2nd's can be a bit time consuming. I developed a guideline for my own treatment. If it was an irreversible procedure, I needed two doctors to agree. In one case I got four opinions, and they were all different, and all contradictory. Luckily, this was around a non-life threatening issue (my ureter o...
