Re: Ten things I love about cancer

Two people have mentioned that having cancer either helped them weed out the bad people, or realize who really cares about them. My wife, when I was going through tx, said the same thing, and I never really understood that or what she meant. Do either of you, or anyone, feel comfortable elaborating...

Re: Ten things I love about cancer

Great post! Prior to diagnosis I was a total Type-A career-a-holic. My diagnosis has made me question my path in life. When I went into work about 5 weeks post-surgery, I deleted all business-related emails without bothering to read them - they somehow seemed frivolous and trivial. I did, however, r...

Re: Update on pre-surgery prep day...

Good luck TallyHo. Two things that kept me grounded on my surgery day: 1) I saw a kid about 8 years old being wheeled out of surgery just as I was about to go in. I figured if an 8 year old kid can do this, I have no right to be fearful! (Turns out later he only had a tonsilectomy, lol) 2) I wanted ...

Re: Pain after right hemicolectomy

I had a right hemi on July 3 and my dad has had more than his fair share of colon resections. The twinges are normal. I still have a few every now and then - nothing that causes pain, mind you. Just my colon reminding me it's still around - like I could forget! I brought it up to my onc on my first ...

Re: Well, It's A Lung Met....

Many heart rate monitors will actually measure METS with great accuracy ... That's interesting. My Timex HRM doesn't measure METS, and I haven't yet come across a way to even calculate METS from heart rate and time. Please tell us more. (By the way, it's hard to imagine that Eric would tire of disc...

Re: Well, It's A Lung Met....

I read that 18 METS is what gets you the 50-51% reduced rsik of recurrence, and the benefits keep improving until it plateaus at 27 METs per week. Many heart rate monitors will actually measure METS with great accuracy - I'll have to see if my Polar F6 will do this. If not I plan to pick up another ...

Re: Chemoradiation day 42!

Congrats, and lol @ your T-shirt. After my surgery, my aunt got me a silver bracelet - it looks like an EKG line running across it but if you read it carefully is has "f*** cancer" inscribed in it (and it isn't bleeped either). Proceeds of the bracelet also go to a cancer-related charity i...

Re: Vitamin Use With Colon Cancer Chemo

Interesting! I started folfox two weeks ago and my onc advised NO supplements of any kind. He mentioned some recent studies done at London Health Science Centre that also confirms this report, and even indicated people who take supplements during chemo may even do a bit worse (he didn't specify what...

Looking for inspiration? Look no further...

I thought I'd share this brief (less than 1 min) clip with the board. It's something that a friend sent to me recently and it never fails to lift my spirits during this difficult time. We can all learn a thing or two from this kid - stay positive, never doubt yourself, never be afraid to look in the...

Re: Staple Removal Fears

I had 27 staples removed from my abdomen one week after surgery (right hemi). Pain: as someone else posted, the nerves aren't fully functioning - I didn't feel a single thing. It was almost like they were removing the staples from...someone else ...if that makes sense. Incision: I had the same fear ...

Re: Should I be concerned about not gaining weight?

How about tracking calories in / calories out for a week to see where you're at? There are many free websites that do this and supply you with other information such as whether you are meeting your daily requirements on certain vitamins, etc... It takes an excess intake of 3500 calories to gain a po...

Re: To Joeyooser/Tim re FiberOne and lactose intolerance

There are many ways to take in FiberOne - people have been known to use it as "shake and bake" coating on chicken, and even bread onion rings with it. It's a common staple in a certain popular weight loss diet because it has no point value - so there are many, many highly creative recipes ...

Re: Update on Surgery and Percocet Question

Hello, after my surgery (open abdominal right-hemicolectomy) I also had Percocet after my morphine drip was taken away. It wasn't my fave. I was also taking Celebrex which may work for you. I also had Tramacet (Tramadol) but it has codiene. So, Celebrex would be my best guess - although it is an NSA...
