Re: Colonoscopy Tomorrow

Good luck! I had my first after diagnosis/treatment/etc. in Jan. It was not clear (polyp removed), but that is allright with me because it still did what it was supposed to do- get rid of something that could become cancer! Preventative measure = good outcome.

Re: Alcohol use since diagnosis

I’m not concerned about it. I have a mixed drink or two a couple times a month. Same here, a few beers a week, sometimes a night with two, when out with friends celebrating something. I look at it like this- I did not go through all that crap to not enjoy things I like. Alchohol is not going to cau...

Re: Bowel prep - Does it ever get easier?!?!

I have done the miralax prep, go lytely, and suprep. The worst is probably the go lytely, and the suprep is bad but isn't as much to drink. I miralax prep is the most tolerable, but none of them are fun. Especially without most of your rectum. Good luck I did the golytely for my colonoscopy a month...

Re: Cause of colon cancer discovered

For Colo rectal Cancer, I think its mainly what you eat and how your lifestyle is in regarding movement. If you sit all day and don't get up to allow blood circulation, or eat a lot of red meat, and drink a lot of alcohol I think this contributes more heavily then this study. Most docs I know have ...

Re: doctor in Cincinnati

I lived in the greater cinci area for ~12 yrs. Had a friend that was diagnosed with early stage colon cancer in his 20's (~18 yrs ago- he's fine!) and he went to UC medical center; same with another close friend of mine who had throat cancer (again, 15+ yrs ago). Both had great experiences.. UC is a...

Re: Reversal is Over

Does the reversal surgery normally take four days in the hospital or is that due to the loop illeostomy? My surgeon told me beforehand that it is normally a 3 day stay, barring complications. I was there almost exactly 72 hours, even with the extra stuff that happened to me. Surgery was at noon on ...

Metamucil (powder and wafers) has been good for me, but it sounds like I need to try the mirafiber sometime!

Re: Constipation after reversal?

I took a dose of Citrucel today and it seems to have done the job. I have now swung to the clustering side of things. I'm just glad I don't feel the need to strain anymore, that had me nervous so soon after surgery. I guess I just need to find a balance. I'm still working on that balance and my rev...

Re: Rectal Cancer - Standard of Care Approach or Neoadjuvant Chemo approach???

I wanted it out sooner than later. About the only thing I would have done differently, if given the option, would have just done FOLFOX chemo before surgery and no radiation (there are trials with this). I only had the ileostomy for 3 months (manageable, though not ideal for sure) and had 6 cycles ...

Re: Rectal Cancer - Standard of Care Approach or Neoadjuvant Chemo approach???

My signature tells my story. No radiation has been great for me. Just got to get through the years of waiting for a recurrence. BTW, my bowel function has been excellent after losing 90% of my rectum. Docs attribute that to not having radiation. I do wish I would not have had the radiation, mostly ...

Re: Polyps at (relatively) young age...wonderibg how to advocate

I did the MyRisk test - diagnosed me with Lynch syndrome and tumor pathology confirmed the mutation. With Lynch, the standard of care is annual colonoscopies- if I would have done this early on, I likely would have never gotten rectal cancer since the polyp would have been caught. For example, I jus...

Re: Reversal is Over

Has the Pelvic Health Center nurse been to see you in the hospital yet? Maybe she can give some hints on how to manage pain once you leave the hospital. Perhaps there are some ointments or creams that have Lidocaine, Xylocaine or something similar that would help with your radiation-induced pain an...
