Re: First Oncology appointment today...good news and bad new

Hello, since 5-FU supposedly won't work well, you may want to ask your oncologist about PARP inhibitors, which work best when there is a dysfunction in the DNA mismatch repair pathway (as is typical in MSI-H tumors). See http://www.asco.org/ASCOv2/Meetings/Abstracts?&vmview=abst_detail_view&...

Re: L/T Survival Studies (EU specific, Stages I-III)--abstra

For me, the study doesn´t focus on what I am most interested in - when do cancer recurrences happen, and what are the chances for disease-free survival for my specific group (stage III C, young, etc.) Hi Mys, we discussed patterns of recurrence a couple of years ago (see my post http://coloncancers...

Re: severe pain after resection

I recently had a subtotal colectomy and had night sweats and episodes of fever at home after being released. It turns out I had a huge abscess that required hospitalization for IV antibiotics and drainage. It sounds as though you may have the same problem, though I don't know what to think about you...

Re: How does cancer learn and become resistant to chemo?

This was discussed some time ago on the forum (see http://coloncancersupport.colonclub.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17008&hilit=+resistance#p132660 ) where I said: It is my understanding that although chemo certainly makes a hostile environment for cancer cells that puts strong selective pressure...

Re: Clinical Trial - For those facing colon surgery -esp. Ca

Thanks Nicola for bringing our attention to this interesting study. I have the full article, which isn't terribly informative at this point as the information from the study is too preliminary: Our rate of recurrent disease is lower than previously published summary estimates [14]. This discrepancy ...

Re: need info (subtotal colectomy)surgery in 5 days

I had this procedure done on July 3 in Toronto (Mount Sinai) and have had rough recovery thanks to an enormous abscess that developed which required a drain. I didn't have a diverting ileostomy and had a rectal tube for 5 days or so. The rectal tube was less of a headache than I anticipated. I would...

surgery tomorrow: July 3, 2012

Tomorrow at 8 am I will finally go under the knife to have a sub-total colectomy with ileo-rectal anastomosis. The surgery is expected to take around 4 hours due to my previous right hemi-colectomy. It is necessary due to two dysplasia-associated legions that popped up in my colon in the last year. ...

Re: On Why Published Clinical Trial Data Should be Made Publ

Bev, you stated my opinion very nicely. Each scientific field has its own peculiarities, but in my field it would be a waste of time to validate all information in a submission when refereeing. Typically, I will check mathematical derivations but stop short at reproducing data (from modeling or simu...

Don't you have high humidity as well?! Across the lake, it is stifling. Enjoy the sun!

Re: High Grade Dysplasia

My history is very similar to yours, long term Chrohn's colitis followed by indeterminate dysplasia. I wasn't mentally prepared to undergo surgery right away, so my GI decided to repeat a colonscopy with biopsies 3 months later. Somehow, this colonscopy didn't reveal any problems and I let things go...

Re: Hi, new here. Has anyone heard of recurrence after 12 ye

I can understand your anxiety, but I think it is pretty unlikely that a recurrence is responsible for your elevated CEA reading. I don't think the shelf life of any epithelial cells extends that long (even for stem cells, though I may be mistaken). Your CEA isn't all that high, but I'm glad you are ...

Re: Adjuvant Army

Isn't it true that chemotherapy is kind of like a science experiment? There have been people on this board (Starbuck comes to mind) that were doing their 6 months of FOLFOX and the dumb cancer kept on growing during that time. So for those people, it doesn't work at all. The only way to know is to ...

Gaelen, I appreciate the update and your willingness to continue to share your experiences. I am so sorry you are without your cat and dogs and wish there were some way for them to be with you. I am also pleased you have not been drawn into any of the board drama that I think is not worthy of too mu...

Re: Magnetically Resonating BrownBagger UPDATED: SCAN CLEAR

BB, I'm relieved to hear your numbness has a relatively benign cause. I have been suffering through some mild lower back aches myself for the past 7 weeks or so. I went to a back specialist here in France (I'm still on sabbatical) and she thinks it is lumbago, perhaps caused by a disc problem aggrav...

Re: A bit of good news - for those with peritoneal mets

Have you asked whether IP chemo (i.e. a port to the peritoneal cavity) in addition to IV systemic chemo is a possibility? I guess they usually require small peritoneal tumors (already debulked?) for ovarian cancer, so this may be off the table. It never seems to be done for colorectal cases and I do...
