Re: focused microwave ablation

I recall a few years ago another RF engineer who was diagnosed with cancer decided to look into just this sort of thing and started a company to develop such a therapy.. He was working with a chemist to use gold/iron nanoparticles to target the tumor tissue, and irradiate them with radio waves to ca...

Re: Oxi?

In terms of toxicity the Oxaliplatin is probably the worse. It is a DNA binder, in that it gets into cells and binds to particular sequences of DNA. Oxaliplatin functions by forming both inter- and intra- strand cross links in DNA. Cross links in DNA prevent DNA replication and transcription, result...

Re: Off Topic - Airfares

Although I don't travel for treatment - I do travel on business. I live nearly equal distance between three airports. Lansing, Flint and Metro Detroit. I most often fly out of Flint, and even though the flight out of Detroit would be the same one I would book if I flew direct out of Detroit, the 15 ...

Re: How effective is erbitux

Val Pal, although Erbitux is a biological agent, I think it should still be classed as chemo. It is a monoclonal antibody that binds to the EGF receptor, on cells, inhibiting its action on its substrate. There are also a few small molecule non biological EGRr inhibitors as well that do the same, and...

Re: Best Prep for Colonoscopy - Pepopik worked for a wimpy m

The prep for this is the main reason everyone fails to schedule or follow through on their colonoscopies at age 50 (Should be earlier in my opinion). My wife skipped hers at age 50, and since she was so fit and athletic and otherwise had few if any risk factors, the doctor agreed. Well fast forward ...

Re: Contact sports while port in?

In the big scheme of things I think damage to my port would be the least of my worries, and living my life doing what I love would be a top priority. Agreed - But one particular sport this wouldn't be very pleasant; Shot gunning sports like Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays or just hunting in general....

Re: round six outrages

Voxx - I thought that you were voluntarily dropping Avastin so you could jump in for surgery should the opportunity arise. What happened? My wife had her 7th treatment 5th with Avastin yesterday. My wife complained that this time at the center there were at least two different families there with kn...

Re: Chemo tomorrow - to eat or not to eat?

Lisa - The Magnesium my wife takes is a 400mg caplet once a day. On the infusion day she takes two that morning. I did quite a lot of research on the FOLFOX chemo protocol when I found out that my wife was going to be on it. The original recommendation was a Mg/Ca IV infusion prior to the Oxaliplati...

Re: Colon Cancer Wish it never existed.

My DH could be the poster child for the recommendation of having a colonoscopy at age 50. If he had, the story may have been a lot different. So could my wife. Had they done the colonoscopy at 50 its likely they would have caught it before it had a chance to spread to her Liver, Spleen and lungs. B...

Re: Chemo tomorrow - to eat or not to eat?

Everyone reacts differently to the FolFox combination I think. My wife is tolerating it very well. She in fact eats her Lunch while the infusion is going on. She takes the minimum meds for nausea, mostly to stay ahead of it, on the day of the Oxi/Avastin infusion, but largely it's well controlled. I...

Re: Chemo opinions out there?

I am not an oncologist, but if it were me I would do the recommended chemo. They thought they had it all the first time. And a single post operative scan showing NED, is just that. It showed nothing! You didn't say what kind of scan was done, but if it was only a CT scan with contrast, then it might...

Re: Swinging chickens for ptfly's wife and Paula!

Congratulations and good wishes Paul for your wife. May she bounce back from surgery very fast and built plenty of strength for the continuing battle. I am bitterly jealous of her available options relative to those of my wife. Give her a big hug as soon as you can. Get her walking and outa there AS...

Re: Outrageous "October Pink" phone call

This is likely the case with regards to spending. But look at the number of clinical trials in early stages, and I think you will note that probably a disproportionate numbers are for lung cancer. This is particularly true of many of the newer targeted therapies. This is the case I think because lun...

Re: Finally good news that isn't off topic

Voxx - My wife's BP and resting heart rate has almost always been rather low. When she was a regular runner (not lately) they feared it was unusually low at times. She is on no medication at all for her BP right now. She says it' was 112/72 yesterday when she had it taken by the onc NP, which is a l...

Re: Finally good news that isn't off topic

Great news Voxx! My wife is on her way home from the chair after a couple stops. She scheduled earlier so she would be able to head to work afterwards, but they got started over an hour later than her previous schedule. So - she sat there getting angry and her BP was elevated. Since she is getting A...
