Re: T3N0M0 Rectal Cancer- refuse surgery?

Just wanted to say what pioneers I think you guys are. As a person who has experienced severe LARS, I have been researching new directions for RC. Seems to me that once the oncological safety of sphincter saving surgery was established the focus shifted to functional outcomes, which is where the whe...

Re: I Have a Life Again!

Hey Judy, greetings from Down under. It is wonderful that you have finally found a routine that works for you, especially after everything you have been through. So happy for you. I'm happy to say that 2 years out from reversal i too have found what works for me. At the end of May I had a partial ob...

Re: Colorectal Surgery (Rectal) post op?

Hi Stacy I had an ultra low anterior resection for rectal cancer in 2015. The surgery took about 3 hours. Post op I had a drain tube, a urinary catheter and a temporary ileostomy. I had a morphine pump for pain relief for about 5 days. Up and showered the following day then the catheter was removed....

Re: Low Anterior Resection Syndrome: Do you have it?

Hi Jeanee
I have LARS too and would like to join your Facebook group. However I can't get the link to work and I have tried searching for LARS or Low anterior resection syndrome with no luck. What is the name of your group?

Re: What to expect?

I just wanted to let you know that it is possible to have low rectal cancer and not have a permanent colostomy. I went into surgery not knowing whether i would have an ultra low anterior resection with a temporary loop ileostomy or an APR with a permanent colostomy. The surgeon said it was just too ...

Re: Question about low grade dysplasia

Hi Laura, when I had a colonoscopy in June 2014 a sessile polyp was found that was biopsied but not removed due to its shape and lack of skill of the GI. Pathology came back benign, but I ended up seeing another GI to have the polyp removed by EMR. On removal pathology came back malignant. I was tol...

Re: Things Not to Say and the Responses I want to Make (Rant)

Came up with this one today: Dude: Heard "X" will cure cancer. Me: Yeah, how much? What's the dosage? What kind? How many times a week? The green or the yellow one? Do I eat it or shove it up my ass? They got the point. Hahaha...oh Rob, that is precious...Can't wait to use the last senten...

Re: bowel resection and catheter

Hi Effie, I was a bit older than your mum when I had a ULAR for rectal cancer. I had a catheter in for about 4 days post op but even after it was removed i had difficulty urinating. Just a tip for your mum once the catheter is removed. Rocking back and forth whilst sitting on the loo seems to help s...

Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

Hi Trig, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 rectal adenocarcinoma 2 years ago. Mine was sessile and located via colonoscopy. Too large/tricky for the GI to remove but the biopsy he did take showed it as benign. Three months later it was removed by endoscopic mucosal resection by an EMR specialist and foun...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

You may be interested in the TESAR trial currently being conducted in the Netherlands. For T1/2 N0 M0 rectal cancer. Participants have all had local excision and then randomized into ULAR/APR or chemo radiation. This interests me because I had tumour removed by EMR but then the two options given wer...

Re: Recommended Stage 1 follow up?

I guess the variation in protocol might relate to presence or absence of high risk features such as degree of cell differentiation. My surgeon said the risk of regular scanning is greater for stage 1 than the risk of recurrence. I would have had mop up chemo if it had been offered but again this is ...

Re: Recommended Stage 1 follow up?

I had a ULAR for rectal cancer in March 2015 and ileostomy reversal in May 2015. No chemo or radio, final staging was Stage 1. I have seen my colorectal surgeon every 3 months since reversal. Have my CEA monitored at each visit. Had a clear colonoscopy at 12 months post op so next colonoscopy is sch...

Re: polyp-awaiting second opinion-colectomy vs endoscopic submucosal dissection

Hi Shelley, Sorry you have had to deal with this, but you'll find lots of support on this forum. My experience was similar to yours. I had a colonoscopy in June 2014 which found a large but supposedly benign polyp that the GI was unable to remove. I was referred to a specialist in endoscopic mucosal...
