Re: J pouch??

I think it depends on your anatomy. My surgeon's plan was to do a j-pouch but once he was in my pelvis, he thought a pouch could increase the probability of a fistula. His view was the pouch helps for the first year, but after that studies have shown no difference to a straight connection.

Re: LAR Results, good, bad and inbetween

One more thing about urinary function. I'm sure it's different between males and females, but I had a lot of trouble voiding my bladder for several months after ULAR surgery. I think there was so much internal trauma and swelling that my urinary tract was squished. I basically had to do several cont...

Re: LAR Results, good, bad and inbetween

Hi, I was also staged T2N0M0 for a low rectal tumor (3 cm from anal verge). I had TME (total mesorectal excision) as part of my LAR in April - my rectum and sigmoid colon were removed laparoscopically; I had a transanal coloanal anastomosis; and a temporary ileostomy. My surgeon was a board certifie...

Re: Radiation side effects?

Great news. I hope you're in the 80%, but if not, the ileostomy really wasn't that bad.

Re: Lap resection surgery set for Dec

From one engineer to another ... I had lap surgery to remove my rectum, sigmoid, and part of my descending colon plus a temp ileo back in April Since my tumor was very low, the surgeon also had to do some trans-anal suturing. My surgery was 5+ hours on a Tuesday. I was walking laps on Wed. morning a...

It's 3 AM and I'm on the toilet

For the past week I've had hours and hours of urgency and clustering from about midnight to 5 am. I was doing ok for a while, but this is having a big impact on my ability to function during the day. I just needed to vent ....

Re: Moving

Six years ago, we moved from NJ to North Carolina for a job opportunity for me. There was no cancer issue to deal with at the time, but we did leave behind family and friends to move to a place where we knew NO ONE, and my husband had to put his career on hold. We picked the area because it had exce...

Re: One year later

Thanks for the update. I am about 8 months behind you with a similar diagnosis and treatment. I'm still dealing with post reversal issues - love to wake up in the morning and have a poop fall out of my pjs - so it is great to hear that the new normal is ok- especially travel.

Re: Vision problems

I have a family history of retinal detachment. It has been described as either flashing lights or a curtain coming down on the vision. Typically can be accompanied by black, peppery floaters. Any of those signs require IMMEDIATE treatment. I would ask your onc to help intervene.

Re: Vision problems

I haven't had chemo, but right before I was diagnosed with RC, I got a blurry vertical line in the vision of my left eye. I went to the eye doctor who diagnosed it as a floater and said it would go away. Well it didn't so I went to a different eye doctor who did some fancy scan of my retina and said...
