Re: Britanny Maynard

People have the choice, I will say it again and again. The means for suicide are readily available without having to involve the medical profession. I will say this one last time. That is a deeply unethical and cruel thing to say to people like Brittany Maynard or me. I could explain the value in s...

Re: Britanny Maynard

jdepp, I don't recall anyone saying that those like Brittany cannot orchestrate their deaths if they so choose. I think we have a different idea about what supporting Brittany's right to choose really looks like. To me, and to Brittany, it looked like Oregon. It did not look like telling a woman wi...

Re: Britanny Maynard

When assisted suicide or euthanasia becomes standard of care, that will be the default point--and then people will fight to have something other than that done. It is already happening. Every so often there are reports of, usually nurses, who are euthanizing people without anyone's permission. Why?...

Re: Britanny Maynard

Curious about the comment, "if you like this sort of thing"...what sort of thing? His dismissive portrayal of Americans as "obsessed" with "cheating death," as "manic" and desperately trying to "endlessly extend life." His selection of the age of 75...

Re: Britanny Maynard

I think Ezekial Emanuel's article "Whose Right to Choose" illustrates the argument from both sides very well. It's long but looks at myths, reality and offers solutions. http://www.theatlantic.com/past/issues/97mar/emanuel/emanuel.htm It is interesting to compare that 17-year-...

Re: Britanny Maynard

Another is that those who object to someone taking their own life to avoid suffering or lifestyle limitations are not compassionate people. That is a very cruel connection to make about someone and one I personally resent greatly. I think this may be the point where we disagree most profoundly. In ...

There is such thing as a slippery slope. Read this pertaining to the Netherlands: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3070710/ Anybody who reads the Pereira article suggested by Robinkaye should also read this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22670091 Here is the abstract: OB...

Re: Britanny Maynard

Brittany Maynard strongly considered hospice and palliative care -- it would have been much easier for her since she could have stayed in California instead of moving to Oregon -- but she decided that it was not the best solution. I do not think Laurettas or anyone else has a better perspective on M...

Re: Britanny Maynard

However, that being said, there are many families with severely handicapped people who deal with situations like zx10guy's father every day for many years. And many of these families, including the handicapped members, find life worth living and even joy amidst the many trials they face every day. ...

Re: Britanny Maynard

When Brittany Maynard took her barbiturates she did not trample on anybody else's rights. She made a personal decision to end her life and, In her own best estimation, saved herself and her family a great deal of suffering (and expense.) Anybody who thinks they can justify denying the next Brittany ...

http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/03/opinion/green-assisted-suicide/index.html?hpt=hp_t4 A piece about Brittany Maynard by Ronald Green from CNN. I'm quoting below; the link has the whole thing. Re: Britanny Maynard

Lauretta, I think we’ll have to agree to disagree. You have made it clear that you would deny Brittany Maynard the barbiturates she wanted, while I would give them to her. I would still be interested to know the actual words you would use to tell her that she must live out her agony — I don’t think ...

Re: Britanny Maynard

I just today attended the funeral of a good friend who died from exactly the same type tumor as this young woman. Brittany made the right decision because the last 2 weeks of my friends life were a living hell. I can't imagine---and don't even want to know----a human being who could have seen the l...

Re: Britanny Maynard

In some ways, those who disapprove of Brittany Maynard's decision remind me of those who oppose gay marriage, or interracial marriage before that, or civil rights, or what have you. They use the specter of fear and "potential harm" to an existing community as a way of denying rights to tho...

Re: Seeking Honest Feedback

My honest feedback: get the scope immediately.

The chance that a scope will put you in a situation where Carole has to "take care of you" is tiny. The chance that you could catch something early, easy, & fixable is much greater. Get the scope.
