Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

OK, I was thinking about that after I saw how often you had been getting scans. I have a CT scan next week and will discuss increasing the frequency with my oncologist at my next appointment in April.

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Hello, new member here! My spouse is stage 4 rectal CA. Now, after a year of radiation and chemo, with a mid-year liver resection for mets, he appears to be tumor-free per CT-PET scan. His surgeon has suggested possibility of wait/watch ! However his oncologist and the tumor board cont to advise AP...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Just to follow along here and comment on the overall "WATCH" part : going back to the original poster Also, of course, the "Watch" part of the strategy is very important so if there is a recurrence it's caught before it spreads. The Kaiser "Watch" procedures are: 1. Si...

Re: Thanks for adding me, so many questions answered here

Roachie, my Grandad was at Gallipoli with the Lancashire Fusiliers. He passed away when I was thirteen, but I was told he said that having survived the landing, being pinned down at Gallipoli saved him from the Western Front. Not that he had any choice in the matter, but somehow he managed to surviv...

Re: Need a New Doctor

My quarterly follow up includes a physical rectal exam and a special pelvic MRI. I believe it's very important these exams and scans are performed by Drs who know what they are doing. If there is a recurrence it needs to be caught asap. I don't know how much experience oncologists have looking at pa...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

I completely agree with everything weissoccermom just said. The decision became easy for me when my surgeon told me that rigorous quarterly check ups were part of the w&w protocol, and that if a recurrence did happen, they would catch it early and salvage surgery stood just as good a chance as i...

Re: How bad would it be to quit oxaliplatin?

I found the oxaliplatin infusions as part of my XELOX regime became more tolerable if the nurse found the largest vein possible on the inside of my elbow. The one time she used a vein in the back of my hand was a disaster...I couldn't use that hand for a week. Also slowing down the rate of infusion ...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Ronjay, congratulations on your complete clinical response. W&W is not an approved method of treatment in the USA, so there is no standard protocol. However my colorectal surgeon strongly advised me to begin a course of follow up chemo as soon as she determined I'd had a cCR and was going on W&a...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

My colorectal surgeon determined my complete clinical response about six weeks after I finished radiation treatment. She recommended I start mop up chemo asap, and I did so the following week. The oxaliplatin infusions are on the first day of each three week cycle, I didn't feel too bad after the fi...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

During chemoradiation my Xeloda dose was set at 1,000 mg twice per day, with weekends off. This dose was much lower than the 2,300 mg twice per day recommended dose based on my body surface area, I don't know why my onc set it this low, but it worked fine for me and I didn't get any of the Xeloda si...

Re: Low WBC months after chemo stops

It took eight months for my WBC, RBC, HGB, HCT, and platelets to reach the normal lower limit. They are all still well below what they were before I started treatment.

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Big Jay, all I can tell you is It's been eighteen months since I finished radiation and almost a year since chemo and my body is just about back to normal. I had my quarterly exam and rectal MRI on Oct 31st and everything looked good. I am so glad I was lucky enough this option was available to me. ...

Re: Planning for RC Surgery Recovery? What to expect??

ABMom, do you know why you are not going to have chemoradiation before surgery? It's standard procedure for rectal cancer, and if successful may help save your rectum.

Re: Husband 43 DX'd rectal cancer HELP

If you're planning to have children or the baseline testosterone is low to begin with, ask for gonadal shielding. This is usually done with a lead glove to cover the jewels. I am more than willing to offer advice based on my experience with the treatment I received for rectal cancer, however at my ...
