Re: Lastest lab work worries

Thank you for the update, Ray. I was wondering how you are doing. Very frustrating on the medical care front, see the link to the Atlantic Monthly article I just posted. Good for you for doing fun things. That is, really, our best one-finger salute to cancer. Good article :) My doc is usually not l...

Re: Systematic chemo ?

There are a number of different regimens for colon cancer and in varying combinations. FOLFOX - 5FU, Leucovorin (Folate), Oxaliplatin FOLFIRI - 5FU, Leucovorin (Folate), Irinotecan FOLFIRNOX - 5FU, Leucovorin (Folate), Irinotecan, Oxaliplatin Also some just get 5FU + Leucovorin Additionally the abov...

Re: Systematic chemo ?

Do you mean Systemic chemo? This is term for chemo treatment that travels through the blood system. This would typically be through an IV in the arm or through a port.

Lastest lab work worries -Update not the news I wanted

If it's not one thing it's another in my medical life. I had an appointment with my oncologist last week, routine, look at scan results, lab work etc. It was not a good day at the hospital as they had just upgraded to a new computer system and they told me I would be seeing the PA, which set me off ...

Re: Your Thoughts During CT n MRi Scans

Same here, CT scans are quick. PET scans are usually..don't move, don't move, and then...damn..have an itch, have an itch... MRI I imagine some type of heavy metal song as the sound reminds me of a heavily distorted guitar.

Re: Surgeon For Port Placement

My mother's port placement was done by the same general surgeon that did the colon resection. Since the port access a major artery close to the heart, shouldn't the procedure have been done by, let's say, a cardiothoracic surgeon? I would think (hope) the port would be in a vein, not an artery. I r...

Everyone reacts differently but here is what I wrote after my HIPEC procedure.

Re: Low-radiation CT

Similar to chemo sabe's response, my oncologist feels the benefit of scans (with active disease) outweigh the risks. Since July I have had 2 chest/abd/pelvis scans, one pelvic to assess an abscess and another one in a week for follow-up as well as CT scans during insertion and removal of a drain for...

Re: Dads appt today, asked about kras

I think what the doctor meant to say about chemo working is that if the first line chemo does not work they will move to second line chemo which can include treatments that are not effective for KRAS mutant patients (Vectibix and Erbitux). The fact that FOLFIRI may be working does not indicate the K...

Sorry things have not gone in the direction you wanted. Been there/am there! Zaltrap is not without issue as well and Stivarga, that one scares me as far as side effects.

Re: Anyone else frustrated by answers from the oncologists?

I have a good relationship with my oncologist, he spends time with me, answers emails, calls me in the evening with results when necessary. I am a very proactive and knowledgeable patient. (thanks to this board) I feel I know what questions to ask and many times know the answers as well. I recall on...

Re: Big mistake ?

All of us who have had surgery to remove tumors (primary or mets) are at risk for re-occurance. That's just the way it is. To not act on an operable tumor for fear of it coming back seems a bit strange. It's like saying don't use antibitiocs for that infection, you'll just get another one at some po...

Re: Palliative treatment and chemo break.

I've never really discussed a schedule with my oncologist but he is all for giving your body a break from the beat-down of chemo. A number of times I pushed a treatment out a week or two due to some event in the way (vacation, etc). At this point I'm on a semi-permanent break as the chemo had become...

Re: Cardiac problems after chemo

Sending positive thoughts! I had some Cardiac issues with Xeloda (pill form of 5FU) which caused my heart vessels to spasm shut, similar to a blockage. It is a low percentage side effect and I think 5FU in IV form can also cause similar issues.
