Re: Traveling on chemo?

Some other things to consider while on chemo. Her neutrophil count will likely be lower because of the chemo making a greater chance infection, germs/illness and you likely don’t have travel insurance if you leave the country if you are actively on chemo. I’ve travelled a few times during my treatme...

There is also a small chance it could be FAP as it starts to present itself around the 12-15 year old range, but again if your parents don’t have it then the chances are very rare for a spontaneous mutation.

Re: Another colonoscopy before surgery?

I would never have this surgery from anyone other than a certified colorectal surgeon. The outcome of this surgery could affect the rest of your life. Going to a hospital 3 hours away for it is a small thing in the big scheme is things.

Re: What did you tell the kids?

When I was first diagnosed with cancer our son was 10. We told him about the surgery and then waited for the results to see how advanced the cNcer was before we told him about the cancer. He has handled the whole thing surprisingly well. We have taken him to a councilor for a few sessions just to ma...

Re: vacation, travel, whatever...just do it!

My wife and I are of the same kind, we travel as much as we can now. The only thing to keep in mind is, with stage 4, there aren’t any travel insurance companies that will cover you. It’s usually fine when traveling within the country but if you are out of the country or on a cruise if something hap...

I am always flush and a bit red after chemo from the steroids. It usually lasts for about 2-3 days and then goes away.

Re: Anyone with Stage IVa just do Xelolda or 5-fu?

I had first bite as well when I was on folfox and found that as long as I remembered to take the first bite slowly and lightly it wasn’t too bad at all. The first few times I would forget and it would be painful but after a couple treatments I would remember all the time and not have too much issue.

Re: Anyone with Stage IVa just do Xelolda or 5-fu?

I wrote my reply before I saw your comment, TXLiz. Yeah, I get your point but I don't think he is considering neuropathy a severe side effect. I think he's thinking about blood clots, that type of thing that OX can cause. P.S. cancer in party hats.... haha... evil devilish partiy-monsters! I think ...

Re: Anyone with Stage IVa just do Xelolda or 5-fu?

For stage 4 my view is to throw everything you have at it, at least to try it. If it was me I would do the oxi until after the first scan to see if it was working. The thing with stats is they are based off a large group of people. Over a group there was a 7% improvement. But if you get down to just...

Benadryl is not normally given prior to treatment unless there are issues with reactions.

Re: Is it possible for a Stage IV to have no met in LN at all?

For cancer to spread from one organ to another it has to travel through the blood. That does not mean you have a type of blood cancer, just cancer cells floating in your blood.

Colon cancer usually metastasizes to the liver first and rectal cancer to the lungs first.

Re: Husband broke down last night

Your surgeon will likely tell you that you can't drive for a while after the surgery, most likely longer after the surgery than when you are discharged.

Re: Impact on function of the colon

I have had a total colectomy and permanent ileostomy for over 3 years now. I have had no issues with mineral or vitamin balances at all since I have had the colon removed. If he proceeds with chemo after the surgery he will have his blood monitored every two weeks and any issues with minerals, vitam...
