Mannose possibly enhancing chemo

Anyone else see this new Nature paper on the sugar mannose? It looks like there's some evidence that "mannose impairs tumour growth and enhances chemotherapy." Also that "colorectal tumors tend to have especially low levels [of the relevant enzyme] so might be good candidates for init...

Re: How to Find The (Best!) Surgeon? The challenge of getting answers from surgeons....

Hi lakeswim, I hear you, picking a surgeon can be tough because there’s not a lot of information to base your decision on! Really all I ended up have to go on was reputation (online is not very useful, other people is better), experience (mostly as they themselves reported, but some public info), an...

Re: Stay local or travel for Surgeon?

Hi lakeswim, I was just reading that thread too, very interesting. For my LARS, as it is, well I don’t have a good basis of comparison except what I’ve read here and heard from docs, but I think I got off pretty easy. Really the main nuisance side effect I have is some strong “urges”, that is, that ...

Re: Stage 3 to 4

teacher2017, thanks for that! Sounds like we have a similar story, mine appeared just 6 months after stopping folfox. Yes, very devastating! So I had my liver resection on 11/6 and it went really well! Margins were clear, and he said everything else in the area looked fine. And yeah those laparoscop...

Re: HAI pump without Dr. K at MSK

Ha hiker I wonder if you and I are in the same region, I also have a 4 hour drive to MSK (and have stayed at the Helmsley on occasion). I can join the chorus and concur they’ve been wonderful about accommodating my distance by moving things around, grouping appointments together, etc. Despite the lo...

Re: Stage 3 to 4

Sorry chadwick for hijacking your thread! Not at all please do! I'm glad you can give cartech78 some good info. And your previous post was definitely not more than I wanted to know! I'm very curious about what protocols you all are following and want to learn as much about different options as I ca...

Re: Stage 3 to 4

Thanks Punky44 and heiders33! Good question about the chemo, my recollection was that it was because I had just finished chemo so recently (6 months ago) and that we might not want to "use up" that option yet. But you made me wonder and I asked my wife, who was with me, and she corrected m...

Re: Stage 3 to 4

I wanted to come back and give an update and, well, the MRI confirmed it: the nodule in the liver is "consistent with metastasis." So that makes it official unfortunately. The lung nodule is still unknown but of course even more suspicious now. I've got an appointment with a liver surgeon ...

Re: Stay local or travel for Surgeon?

I traveled to have a robotic LAR done at MSK last October. It my case it was SO worth it, the whole of both surgeries (LAR then ostomy reversal) went flawlessly and my quality of life afterwards has been great. However for me it was just a few hours drive--involving a cross-country flight post-op co...

Re: Stage 3 to 4

I think you guys are quite right. The doc who told me the results on Friday gave the impression it was a done deal but we just saw the oncologist today and she was cautiously optimistic--they are suspicious but still inconclusive. I'm feeling much better but it's still up in the air of course. The l...

Re: Stage 3 to 4

Thanks punky and stu, I appreciate the support and hearing the lung met removal might not be so bad. That one definitely seems like the wildcard so far. My CEA has never been an indicator, it was normal when I was first diagnosed and stayed normal throughout (between about 0.5 to 1.5). I'm not famil...

Stage 3 to 4

Hi everyone, Stage III rectal here, and, well, I just received the news my latest CT scan shows two small nodules, one in the liver and one in the lung. I got word Friday evening so haven’t had a chance to talk to an oncologist yet but I realize this now makes me a stage IV and everything that goes ...
